There’s a beat of silence.

“He has an excellent reputation, Jon.”

“I know, but you…” I sigh. “I don’t want her hurt again.”

“Okay. Just don’t get any PIs or anything. If that got out, it would be worse than that model telling everyone you’re moving in together.”

I stand up. “What?”

“Oh, I thought that’s why you were in Juniper.”

“No. I’m not moving in with her. We never even slept over at each other’s places.”

We spent a few nights together, but we used hotels when she was in Europe. I have avoided having women at my place since I dated Gia, the Italian supermodel. She started leaving things at my apartment after the first night. When I broke it off with her, she had a suitcase full of clothes and jewelry there.

“Oh well, she didn’t give an interview, but I saw it onTMZthis morning.”

Which means my mother will see it before long. Dammit.

“Let me go so I can get my people to issue a statement.”

“You could ignore it.”

“I would if it was just me, but this could affect stockholders and their bottom line.”

“You should just sell that company and travel or something.”

I have been thinking about doing that. I’ve had offers through the years and ignored them all. That’s until Trevor approached me. I know he would treat my employees well. I just don’t know what I would do with myself.

“Earth to Jon.”

“Sorry,” I mumble. “I need to get out in front of this or try to at this point.”

“And call your mom.”

“I will after lunch. She’s teaching this morning.”

After getting off the phone with Nancy, I make a quick call to my PR department to make sure they know how to handle the statement about Sienna. It’s annoying to deal with this sort of thing. My grandmother is probably right. I should stop dating those kinds of women. I’m not about to settle down with a woman who would rather be in front of the camera for most of the day.

I grab another cup of coffee and start my research. It isn’t hard to find information about Ted. He’s a former Cowboy, so there’s info about him everywhere. What I need is more than the fact that he was married before. He apparently leads a very private life except for his charity work. I don’t want to hire a private eye, but I have a security team for things like this, so I contact them to give them Ted’s name for research.

After hanging up with them, I think about my next move. I have a terrible feeling about Avery. She seems like someone who would stay here just out of spite. Yes, I have someone already looking into her. My grandmother is sharp and can handle herself, but I never take anything for granted. Estella is worth billions. For some reason, Avery’s made a connection with her. It’s odd, to say the least. Avery isn’t even thirty, but she’s hanging out with my grandmother. Estella has never been anyone’s idea of a good time, especially a millennial.

My phone rings, and I see my mother’s name. I could let it go to voicemail, but I have learned not to do that. She’s not overbearing, but she knows when I’m trying to avoid her.

“You rang.”

“Your grandmother says you have a roommate,” my mother asks. I roll my eyes. I don’t know what Estella is up to, but she has other motives for making me live with Avery. As cold-hearted as she is, I thought my grandmother would kick Avery out.

“I have a housemate.”

“A woman.”

“A thief.”

“She’s a criminal?” I hear the amusement in my mother’s voice.

“Not officially, but she stole my house.”
