Page 54 of Imperfect Love

“You’re kidding.”

I shake my head. “He lives with my brother and his wife now. He actually brought the two of them together.”

I sigh as I thread my fingers through Meredith’s fur. I have always been partial to cats, to animals in general. They didn’t expect anything but love, and in return, they gave you everything. All their days and all their love.

“Avery?”

“Yeah?”

“Have you talked to anyone?”

His voice is quiet with concern, that kind of voice I always suspect mortuary people practice every day.

“Talked to anyone?”

“About your grandmother.”

“Sure, I talked to people about her.”

“I mean a therapist.”

“I don’t need a therapist. I’m handling everything just fine.”

He gives me a look that tells me he doesn’t believe me.

“You’re not sleeping.”

“I’m worried about being homeless.”

He rolls his eyes, and I know that’s what people expect of me. They always want me to make them roll their eyes or laugh. It’s something that I am very good at.

“Remember, I had you checked out.”

“You’ve been checking me out? Do you want to kiss me?”

I mean it as a joke, but his gaze drops to my mouth for the barest of moments.

“I mean that I had a look at your life. You have a lot of money.”

I try not to be irritated because I knew he would do that. “I am in no way as rich as you are.”

“Still, I have no idea why you want to stay in this house.”

I sigh and turn back the TV.

“Avery?”

It’s hard to put my thoughts in order. I’m tired, but I’m also sitting next to one of the most eligible bachelors in the tech industry. He’s gorgeous, and dammit, my fingers are still itching to slip through those curls.

“I just like this house. I like where it sits, and I really like that garden. I’d try and buy it off your grandma if she would let me.”

There is a long beat of silence. I feel him studying me. I turn and face him.

“What?”

He shakes his head. “Nothing. I just thought…”

“You thought what?”
