“Which Columbo?”

“The one with Spock.”

She nods, a small smile curving her lips. “Well, be that as it may, she doesn’t have the mental capacity to deal with something like this.”

“Are you saying she isn’t smart enough? Because I have to tell you, I might not like the woman, but she has got to have a near-genius IQ.”

Her smile turns into a grin. “Yes, she does. Five points higher than you.”

That has me blinking. “Say what now?”

“Hard to believe a woman beat you?”

“No. There are a lot of women smarter than I am. Just…are you screwing with me?”

She shakes her head. “No. I had her checked out when she started hanging around with Travis and Nancy. You know how I feel about outsiders.”

I nod. And now I feel foolish for even thinking that my grandmother would be taken in by someone.

“And I’m also sure you had her checked out.” Not a question.

“Yes. I did. I wanted to ensure she wasn’t out to get your money.”

“And you found out she is pretty well off.”

She is. She has more money than I thought she would. One of her brother’s business partners invests for her.

“Let’s put Avery aside. I need your agreement to help me, or I will ask someone else, and you know how I feel about the others.”

And by others, she means my half-siblings and cousins. They are all lazy to varying degrees. I nod. “I’ll do it.”

“Good. I have a meeting with Mason Spencer, so I need to get ready.”

“Why are you meeting with Spencer?”

“He’s the caterer for this event. You know I like to use local places, andThe Mason Jaris one of my favorite places to eat.”

It makes sense, so I nod, but she’s still being weird. I can’t put my finger on it, but something is up with my grandmother. “It’s a shame your mother can’t attend the event.”

I grunt.

“That is no way to respond, Jonathon.”

She only uses my full first name when she’s irritated with me. I always hated hearing her say it when I was a kid. To be honest, I still do.

“Apologies.”

Bessie sets a massive plate of pancakes in front of me. “Thanks, Bessie.”

She gives me a wink, and after giving my grandmother her plate, she leaves us to our breakfast.

“You shouldn’t be so upset over your mother moving in with a man. A lot of people do it these days.”

I blink. “I’m not upset she’s moving in with Ted. I’m upset that she hid him from me for so long.”

“Yes, I don’t know why she was so worried. Ted seems like a very nice man. You know he proposed?”

Glancing at her, I frown. “He did?”
