Page 65 of Imperfect Love

“Here you go,” the waitress says, leaning over to give me a view of her cleavage. Avery makes a rude noise. I glance over to see her roll her eyes.

“If you want him to bed you, just ask for his number.”

The waitress straightens and shoots Avery a glare. Avery ignores the woman. Instead, she’s sucking down her shake. What is Avery like in bed? Is she just as wild? Does she like to experiment?

Dammit. My jeans have grown tight over my erection. I cannot get hot over a woman I need out of my house, especially since the two of us will be there at night. And let me just say she wears almost nothing to bed.

“So, Jon, how about it? You and me this Friday night?”

I blink and look at the waitress. I vaguely remember her from my youth. She was definitely a cheerleader, and because I was a hot-blooded heterosexual boy, I’m sure I noticed her. The one thing I do remember is a particular incident with Becca Gold, one of the owners of Nerdvana.

“I’m busy.”

She gives Avery a hostile glance. My roommate just shrugs. “I’m not going to be here, so don’t look at me. Also, weird that you would ask him out on a date in front of another woman. I mean, if that woman was his grandma, that would make sense, but I’m young enough to date him, so it’s weird, right?”

The waitress blinks. “You are weird.”

Avery gives the woman a blinding smile. “Why, thank you.”

Then, she starts eating again, and I can’t help it. I laugh. And not just the little chuckle like earlier. This one has me throwing back my head and laughing. People turn and look at us, but I don’t care. From how Avery is smiling while chewing her food to how the waitress looks at her, it’s so funny.

With an exaggerated huff, the waitress stomps off.

“I wouldn’t sit at her station any time soon,” I tell Avery.

She shrugs and looks outside. We have one of the booths that line Main Street, so we have a good view out the windows.

“Avery?”

She shakes herself and looks at me. “I usually come in the middle of the night. I like to be here when no one…but…”

Then she trails off, and I cock my head. “No one but?”

Is she meeting a guy here at night? Is it Josh, that jerk? I will say he was never a jerk to me, but I feel he is one based on the realization that Avery might be interested in him.

“No one.”

“No one but no one? That doesn’t make any sense even for you.”

She sighs.

“Are you meeting a secret lover like Mr. Keller?”

Her mouth twitches. “No. You can’t do anything like that in this town. Everyone would know. It’s just that I like it when it’s quiet. In the middle of the night or early in the morning, it’s calm. It helps me.”

I nod in understanding. From what I’ve seen, she has ADD or ADHD, both of which would make it hard to concentrate when she gets too many things going.

“Understandable.”

Then what she said hits me.

“Where are you going on Friday?”

“Nunya.”

“Nunya?”

“As in, none of your business.”
