Page 75 of Imperfect Love

Which reminds me, I have to head over to my grandmother’s. Although now I don’t want to. I want to stay here and listen to Avery tell me about her time in San Antonio. And that’s enough to irritate me.

Liv turns and heads to the kitchen door, and to break the spell Avery has on me, I follow Liv. She’s laughing, watching her kids dance around the yard. Callie doesn’t look like the serious little girl from the other night, and Sammy is…well, Sammy.

“They think the yard is magical. As soon as I can afford it, I want to do something like this to our backyard.”

“Aren’t you renting that house from my cousin?”

She nods. “I’m going to buy it off her.”

“Your cousin and her man are my date tonight.”

I blink and look down at Avery. Again, for someone so loud, she is being super stealthy. “What?”

“Liv and Mason have to be there early.”

“You could go with Jon.”

My head whips around to look at her sister, who gives me a knowing smile. Okay, maybe there is some kind of weird knowledge power base all moms have.

“Nope,” Avery says.

“Why not?”

I glance down at her. Her attention is out in the yard, watching the kids. Meredith is following them through the yard as if she’s guarding them.

“Yeah, why not?” I ask.

“You have to be there early to help your granny.”

“Estella has never been called granny.”

She snorts. “Yeah, well, you should try it.”

I don’t say anything in response.

“I also need a nap. Getting up so early threw me completely out of my regular rhythm.”

“You mean staying up until four or five, then passing out until noon?” I ask.

Her sister laughs. “He has you there.”

“Go away. You are my least favorite sister. Maybe,” she says, looking around me to her sister, “I’ll rate you lower than Fritz.”

Another laugh. “Sure. You do that. Call him when you need to talk about your latest Taylor clowning. Kids, let’s go.”

There were complaints and whining.

“Houdini is missing you,” she calls out. They start running full speed to the door.

“What do you say to Mr. Howard about letting you play in the yard?”

“Not his yard,” Avery says.

“Thank you,” the kids yell out as they rush into the house.

“Sorry about them. See you tonight, Jon. Avery, don’t oversleep. You know Estella wants you there.”

She nods.
