Max looked downat Anna’s bent head and almost came at the sight of her kneeling in front of him. The curls she’d fastened to the top of her head now lay about her shoulders in abandon. Their foreplay in the living room had been light, nothing compared to what he usually liked. He loved teasing, pushing a woman higher than she’d ever been before. But knowing Anna saw him as a challenge turned him on. Usually the initiator, Max found her brand of aggressiveness more arousing than sex with other women.

Every fiber of his being demanded she take him in her mouth, but he wanted her to call the shots. Allowing her to control the rhythm of their intimacy was pushing him beyond anything he had felt before. The thrill was knowing he was at her mercy. She cupped his balls with one hand, squeezing, caressing them, her nails scraping against the sensitive skin. They drew tighter and a drip of precum wet the head of his dick. As she continued to massage his balls, she curled the fingers of her other hand around the base of his cock.

She slid her hand up the length and back down. Blood drained from his head and rushed straight to his dick. His head spun as he watched her lick the cum off the tip with her tongue.

Closing her eyes, she licked her lips. “Max, you taste wonderful. The perfect dessert.”

Jesus. She twirled her tongue around the top of his shaft, then took the crown of his cock into her mouth. Just enough to tease, not enough to satisfy. She circled the tip with her tongue again, and when he was sure he was ready to scream, she accepted the length of him into her warm mouth. She looked up, caught his gaze, and slowly began sucking on him. She kept one hand on his balls, moving her fingers over them as she worked his cock in earnest. Each time she drew to the top of his dick, she passed her tongue over the head.

He threaded his fingers through her hair, molding his hands to her head. She closed her eyes, humming as she increased the speed of her ministrations. The vibrations reached down to his toes. He curled them into the carpet and gritted his teeth, trying to keep from losing all control.

“Oh, Anna, yeah, baby.”

His muscles tensed as she pushed him further, massaging his balls, sucking, and slurping his dick. When Max thought he would never find relief, when he was sure there was no way of feeling any better than he did at that moment, he exploded. Anna continued sucking as he came. She licked up one side and down the other as he gyrated his hips, fucking her mouth, knowing nothing had ever felt as good as this. Seconds later, they both collapsed on the bed, and he pulled her close, reveling in the feel of her soft skin next to his.

“Well, Maxwell, I think I won that little game.”

He chuckled. “Give me a minute, Anna, and we’ll do round two.”

Max awoketo a small slant of sunshine warming his face, and he smiled, keeping his eyes closed. Drawing in a deep breath, he enjoyed the spicy scent of Anna, wildflowers and passion. He’d never be able to smell lilac and not think of how it felt holding Anna, slipping into her body, hearing her moan his name. After a week of nights spent learning Anna inside and out, Max knew he’d yet to completely get his fill of her—and never would.

Nothing felt as good as waking in Anna’s bed. Well, okay, making love with Anna ranked ahead of that and falling asleep with her snuggled against him was probably a tie. There was definitely something to be said about Saturday morning snuggling.

Thinking of just what sort of snuggling he’d like to accomplish, he rolled over to pull her into his arms and found the bed empty. He opened his eyes and looked around the room. Sitting up, he listened for clues to where she might be. No water was running, and her robe was lying over the foot of the bed. From the brightness of the sun filtered by the blinds, Max realized he’d slept later than he thought.

The panic that welled up, almost choking him, was completely irrational and embarrassing, but he couldn’t stop it.

Where the hell had she gone this time?

He grabbed his jeans and shoved his legs into them, zipping them up but not buttoning them. He stomped out of the room, irritated and aroused and wholly not in a good mood. He could smell the coffee she’d brewed and instead of going for a much-needed cup, he followed the sound of the birds chirping. She’d left her sliding glass door open. He found her sitting on her porch, sipping coffee, and staring out over the lawn in deep contemplation.

Since Anna hadn’t noticed him, Max felt free to study her. Her brow was puckered, a frown pulling her lips down. She looked as if she were trying to solve the problems of the world. He didn’t like the expression on her face, the unhappiness he saw there. Not that he didn’t think Anna wasn’t given to deep thoughts. Unlike a lot of men, he never assumed she was dumb. Lord knew she made a killing with her restaurant because of her sound business decisions. No, this wasn’t business weighing on her. And if it wasn’t, his worry was that it was their relationship.

Uneasiness shifted through him as he watched her sip her coffee. It wasn’t guilt, per se. Max knew he hadn’t done anything in particular to hurt her, but there was an air of pain settled around her. It hurt Max just to see the resigned look in her gaze. Prodding her to find out her worries would do no good and he’d end up irritated he couldn’t get it out of her. She wouldn’t open up to him about this.

He rubbed his hand over his chest, his concerns increasing as she sighed. The need to ease the worries, to keep her from pain, outdid his own basic need for acceptance. Making her happy, lessening her pain—those took precedence.

Anna relaxedagainst the back of her wicker chair and stared out over her back lawn enjoying the cool morning breeze as she sipped her coffee. Late May was one of her favorite times in South Georgia. The azaleas were growing like crazy since the heat of summer had not slapped them yet. Mornings were still comfortable enough to sit outside and watch the world awaken on a sleepy Saturday.

She’d snuck out to her back porch, leaving Max still asleep and looking entirely too right in her bed. Since they’d become lovers less than a week ago, they hadn’t spent a night apart. It was more than a little unsettling to realize she’d become so dependent on him. Not so much dependent, but maybe expectant. And expectations were dangerous things to have in an affair. Even something as simple as having him next to her in bed, the loss of that would be almost unbearable if she didn’t keep it on the level. It’d cut her deeper than any other pain she’d been through.

“Serious thoughts on such a beautiful morning.”

She turned and found the object of her thoughts standing at the sliding glass door. His hair was a mess as if he rose and immediately went looking for her. He was shirtless and wore only a pair of jeans, the top button unsnapped.

Trying to resist the temptation he offered on a regular basis, she turned her head, took a sip of coffee, and looked back over her lawn. “Just thinking about my meeting with the real-estate agent yesterday.”

It wasn’t exactly true…okay she was lying through her teeth. But she didn’t want to discuss anything on the relationship front. Max still thought more of their union due to his own sense of obligation. He hadn’t come to terms with the situation.

“Hmm.” He said nothing else and being a coward, she didn’t look at him as he settled into the chair next to hers. He stretched his long legs out, crowded her and then rubbed his feet against hers. “So, tonight we have the monthly dinner, but we have a whole day free to play.”

She did look at him then and frowned. “Dinner?”

He studied her and a look that might have been irritation came and went in his eyes so fast she was sure she’d been wrong. “Yes. The Lake City Chamber of Commerce dinner. We go every month together.”
