Knowing it might turn ugly, she decided it would be best to get out of the spotlight of her customers.

“Why don’t we go into my office?”

His smile widened into what she expected Freddy thought was seductive. “Sure thing, Anna.”

His easy agreement was tinged with arrogance. As she threaded her way to her office, pushing in chairs and gathering some paper cups along the way, she realized the one great thing about this would be to deflate any thoughts he had of being welcomed back in her bed.

Anna dumped the trash into the can just inside her door and walked to her desk. Irritation had her pulse hopping, not to mention her head throbbing. Once Freddy closed the door, he leaned against it, a smug smile curving his lips as if he expected her to jump into his arms.

“What do you want, Freddy?”

His grin dimmed a little at her tone. “I’ve been trying to get hold of you for days. And when I finally did get you alone, Chandler had to bully his way in. You really should tell him you’re all grown up now.”

“That still doesn’t tell me what you want.”

“I thought, well, since I returned, I thought we could get together.”

Really, he pretended as if nothing bad had happened between them. Had she been so stupid to believe herself in love with him? She must have been. The memory of rushing headlong into a relationship with him still embarrassed her. Two weeks of dating, and she gave herself happily. It wasn’t until a few days later she realized he’d used her. And not only for sex, which he could have gotten off just about any girl in school. A bet. That is all she’d been to him.

“I really don’t think that’s a good idea.”

He frowned and shoved his hands into his pockets. “I knew you might be a little sore at me still.”

She laughed but there was little humor to it. “Really? And why would that be, Freddy?”

“It might have to do with our breakup.”

Was he really that stupid? No, he wasn’t, from the look in his eyes. He knew he’d been a bastard, but he was a big enough idiot to think that she would forget what he did to her.

“So, let me get this straight. You want me to date you, despite the fact that you took my virginity on a bet?”

“Ah, come on, Anna. That was how long ago?”

Unbelievable. He actually thought she would let bygones be bygones.

“Not long enough.”

“I was stupid.”

“Yes.”

“I thought by now you would be over that.”

He really couldn’t be that stupid. But then, he was raised to be a boy king. As quarterback of their football team, along with being from one of the richer families in town, Freddy had been favored in everything. Especially when he hit high school. His good looks, athletic ability, and the vintage Camaro his father bought him, made him a leader of the pack in high school. It was the reason she’d been so flattered when he had turned his attention to her. And stupid. She’d been very, very stupid.

“You thought wrong.”

Irritation, with a flash of anger moved over his face, but apparently, he’d learned how to mask his ugliness over the years. It disappeared as fast as it had appeared.

“Listen, I understand how you might think me a real bastard for what I did.” He tried to appease her with a humble smile. Anna figured he must know some real dumbass women. “But I’ve grown a lot since then. Matured, if you will.”

Not enough to realize that this line wasn’t going to work with her.

“I really appreciate that you are back in town, and maybe don’t know a lot of single women—”

“I didn’t say that.”

Ah, well, protect the ego at all costs. “Freddy, I really don’t want to pick up where we left off. Because, if I remember correctly, you accused me of being a slut, while at the same time you collected money for getting me to sleep with you.”
