Frank rocked back on his heels. “Nope. Swanson was going to press charges. Apparently, his father had a talk with him. Decided against it.”

“Fine. Tell Ruby’s to send me the bill for the damage, including that piece of crap mirror.”

With that he dragged her out the door, Chris following close on her heels. Anna didn’t put up any resistance to being treated like a rag doll because that last bit of information had her mind whirling.

Max had beat up Freddy? And just how the hell had that happened? And why?

Max headed for the driver’s door. “Give me the keys, Anna.”

At that she dug in her heels. “No way, mister. You aren’t driving my car.”

He released her hand and frowned down at her. If she hadn’t been irritated with him, she was sure she’d find him extremely tempting. Well, hell, okay, she still found him tempting. Especially with his hair all mussed, he just looked…cute.

“You aren’t driving my baby, not as drunk as you are.”

He snorted and crossed his arms. “I’m not drunk.”

She raised one eyebrow.

“I’m not. I was earlier, but I’m not now.”

She settled her fists on her hips. “Really? So, stone-cold sober you use the F-word and threaten Deputy Frank.”

Chris chuckled and she shot him a dirty look. “And you are just as bad. How could you let him do this?”

“Have you tried to stop Max when he’s got it in his mind to do something?”

“Excuse me. I’m still here,” Max said.

She gave him a slight shove. “Kind of hard to miss you. Get in and I’ll drive you home.”

She unlocked the car, Chris climbed in the backseat, but Max stopped beside her.

“I’m sorry, Anna.”

She smiled at him and patted his cheek. “You worry too much, Max.”

But he didn’t return her smile. Instead, he cupped her face in his hands and tugged her closer. It was a simple kiss, just a brush of his mouth over hers. It didn’t matter. Her heart still stuttered, and her body warmed. Closing her eyes, she lost herself in it, in him. She could smell the beer he’d drank, the lingering scent of his cologne. By the time he pulled away—just a few seconds really—she was breathing heavily.

“I don’t want to go home tonight,” Max said.

She rested her head against his chest as he wrapped his arms around her waist. Anna was happy to feel his heart beating as fast as hers. “What about Chris?”

“We can drop him off at my place.”

Anna pulled back from him. “You’ll explain yourself.”

He winced but nodded.

“Okay.”

He gave her another hard kiss then shifted away to allow her to slide into the driver’s seat. Shutting the door, he walked around the hood of the car.

“Go easy on the old boy tonight. He’s a little out of his comfort zone,” Chris said from the backseat.

Before she could ask him what he meant, Max was opening the passenger seat door and slipping in beside her.

He glanced behind him. “We’re going to drop you off at my house, Chris.”
