“You promise to just rest?”

She nodded. “I promise. I’ll put on some music and rest on that couch. Or maybe I’ll watch that new Jakob Wulf movieNo Body, No Crime.”

“Thank you.”

The simple words were filled with love and relief. If it was anyone else, and any other situation, Anna would have smacked him around. But this, she could understand. Max lived by schedules and control. Babies…well, they didn’t.

She rose to her toes and brushed her mouth over his. Just that little connection had her heart hammering, her head spinning. It was always like that, and she didn’t think it would ever change.

“I love you.”

He smiled. “Go rest.”

She nodded and made her way back to her office. In the last few months, she had made plans for new stores in Waycross, and Tifton, but that had been put off until after baby Chandler showed up.

As she sat down, she sighed. Truth was, her back had been killing her this morning. Frustration filtered through her. One thing she didn’t tell Max was that she was worried too.

Slipping off her shoes, she grabbed her phone to text Cynthia.

Anna:Please come deal with your EF.

EF stood for ex-fiancé.

Cynthia:No way. There’s a reason I dumped him.

Anna smiled. She never would have thought she would become best friends with the woman who had interfered and almost ruined Anna’s relationship with Max. But over the years, she and Cynthia had grown even closer, even with her in Hawaii.

Anna:He’s overbearing.

Cynthia:You knew this when you married him.

Anna:He is following me around the café.

Cynthia:*Eye Roll Gif*

Anna smiled. Cynthia had loosened up over the years, but that happens when you find your place in the world, and a man to share it with.

Anna:What are you doing special today?

Cynthia had opened a bakery in Hawaii. Every day she had one or two specials that were not on the regular menu. Since Anna had been deprived of Cynthia’s baked goods, she lived vicariously through their texts.

Cynthia: It’s King Kamehameha Day here today.

A pic came through with a ton of cupcakes with gold trim and lots of sparkles, then a few pies.

Anna:What are those pies? And what kind of cupcakes?

But before Cynthia could text her the answers, Anna felt a sharp twinge that brought tears to her eyes. She dropped her phone on the couch beside her.

“Oh, damn,” she whispered. She did the breathing she had practiced, but it didn’t help that much. It lasted longer than she had expected a contraction to last.

As soon as the pain ended, she stood thinking that maybe she should tell Max. Before she reached the door, it opened, Max rushed in with a worried look on his handsome face.

“What’s wrong?”

She blinked. “How did you know something was wrong?”

“Cynthia said you didn’t answer her texts.”
