I only had one shot at this, and if I was going to make it work, I had to phrase this exactly right.

“I don’t want to sound too forward but…” I said, trailing off.

I hoped that she would understand what I was hinting at and be willing to fill in the gaps.

“Yes?” she asked hesitantly.

“My driver is out back. I can have him take you home, or…you could come back to my place with me.”

“And what if I want to take the subway home? Or a taxi?”

“Well, I suppose that’s up to you.”

Grace tapped her chin with her pointer finger and looked off into the distance.

“Up to me, huh?” she mumbled under her breath.

I waited for a full minute for her to say something, but she just sat there, contemplating her decision. I have to admit I was getting a bit impatient, but I continued waiting, hoping that it would pay off in my favor.

“Okay,” Grace finally said.

“You’re going to need to be more specific than that.”

“Okay, I’ll go with you. To your place. I’ve always wondered how the 1% live,” she said with a grin.

I rolled my eyes at her.

“I am not the 1%.”

“Well, you’re closer to it than I’ll ever be. So I hope you’re prepared to impress me.”

“Let’s just get out of here, okay?”

Grace stood from her chair and started walking towards the front door. I cleared my throat to get her attention, and she whirled around when she realized I wasn’t following her. I cocked my head towards the back of the restaurant, and she gave me a puzzled look.

“We can’t go that way,” I said.

Grace looked at the front door and then back at me. Finally the realization hit her.

“Right,” she said, “billionaire rockstar can’t be seen with a woman who isn’t a supermodel. Gotcha.”

“You know that’s not true.”

“Then why are you making me sneak around in a dark alley?”

“You know why,” I said, nudging her with my hip.

She bit her lip and smirked at me.

“I know. You’re just too fun to tease.”

I placed my hand on her lower back and led her towards the back door. The manager nodded as we left, and the headlights of the car were the only light in the alley. I opened the door for Grace and led her inside.

Before I had even gotten both legs into the car, Grace grabbed me by my shirt collar and pulled me on top of her. My lips met hers, and it was like I was right back where I was supposed to be. I hadn’t realized how much I had needed her. Or how much I had been longing for her. She tasted like strawberries and I was ready to devour her.

The driver cleared his throat and we both realized in the same moment that the partition was down, and that I hadn’t told him where we were going. I glanced down at Grace who looked horrified, and I tried to stifle my chuckle. It wasn’t the first time he had seen me in a position like this, but I certainly wasn’t going to tell that to Grace.

“We’re going home, please.”
