“Well, you didn’t really tell my why you love it here. I mean, you said you had your first drink here. And then you told me a terrible memory. Tell me something good.”

“Okay,” I said, clearing my throat. “This is the place where I decided to pursue music professionally. And I was here when I got the call that a record label wanted to sign me.”

“See? That’s incredible!” Grace squealed, “I’m starting to love this place already.”

I smiled at her and knew I was in serious trouble. I was falling in love with this girl. I wasn’t even sure I had ever been in love before, but I knew that’s where I was headed with Grace.

“Alright, that’s enough about me for now,” I said

“What would you like to know about me? I’m an open book.”

“I don’t think that’s true.”

“Why not?” she asked.

“You seem like a very closed book, at least for most people.”

“Well, you have to be willing to put in the work to get me to be an open book. And I think you have.”

She took another sip of her beer and her lips on the edge of the bottle were driving me crazy. As much as I loved sitting here with her and learning everything there was to know about each other, I couldn’t wait to get her home.

“I told you about my terrible dating history. Tell me about yours.”

Grace laughed and avoided eye contact for a full minute before looking back at me.

“You sure you want to know?”

I nodded and gestured for her to go on.

“Well, there isn’t a history to speak of. Never had a real boyfriend, never lived with anyone, never been in love, never been on more than three dates with the same guy.”

“I find that hard to believe.”

A gorgeous, successful, intelligent, funny woman like her? The men of the world were severely missing out.

“It’s true. In college I wasn’t really interested in dating. Then I got my master’s and I was so busy that I didn’t have time for it. And now, I don’t know. I guess it just hasn’t been a priority.”

“Why not?”

“I’d rather focus on my career and being successful there.”

“It’s possible to do both, you know?”

“You’re one to talk.”

I smirked at her. She was absolutely right.

“I don’t like hooking up with random guys. I never have.”

“Until now.”

She rolled her eyes at me and shook her head.

“Yeah, I guess until now.”

“I don’t like random hookups either. I’ve always wanted something deeper than that. Something more meaningful.”

Grace looked up at me with a perplexed look on her face, and I suddenly felt like she was going to start pointing and laughing at me for admitting that.
