I whirled around to see Dylan standing behind me, running a hand through his hair.

“I—um—”

“If I have to go bar hopping with total strangers, you’re coming with me.”

“I thought we weren’t supposed to be around each other anymore.”

“We’re friends, right? Ella arranged this whole party. I think she’ll be okay with it for tonight.”

Friends. The word stung as he said it. Even after we had broken up, or whatever it was, I was still holding out a tiny bit of hope that things would work out. Clearly, he didn’t have the same hope. I was just a friend to him now.

I climbed onto the bus, not responding to Dylan, and I took the only open seat that was left. Music was blasting and Jonas and Ella were standing in the middle of the bus dancing on top of each other like high schoolers at a prom.

We arrived at the first bar, and I knew I needed to get a few drinks in me. I headed straight to the bartender and ordered a vodka soda.

“Make that two,” Dylan said as he took the seat next to me.

I set my head in my hand and looked over at him.

“Don’t you have someone else to bother tonight?”

“Nope. Just you.”

I sighed as the bartender sat the drinks in front of us.

“There are plenty of girls here. Ella doesn’t want you sticking your ‘you-know-what’ into my ‘you-know-where’.”

“Did she say that?”

I nodded and Dylan let out a loud laugh. I don’t think I had ever heard him laugh like that, but it made me smile, as much as I resented that fact.

“Sounds about right,” he said, taking a sip of his drink, “just come dance with me.”

Before I had time to respond, Dylan was leading me out to the dance floor where we joined the rest of the group. He pressed his hips to my ass, and I instantly remembered what it felt like to be touched by him.

He had a gentle yet firm touch, and he knew exactly where to touch me to send chills down my spine. Even though he wasn’t doing anything sexual, I longed to be in bed with him again. I ground my hips against his as we danced and he wrapped an arm around my waist.

I saw Ella glance at us, but it was clear she was too focused on her fiancé to even realize what was happening. Besides, she knew we were the only single people there that night.

Dylan moved my hair off my shoulder and pressed his lips to my neck. I instantly melted into him and closed my eyes.

“I can’t live without you,” he whispered.

It took a moment for his words to sink in as we swayed together, but as soon as they did, I turned around to face him.

“We can’t do this here.”

“Then where can we do it?”

“I don’t know, but tonight is about Ella and Jonas. We can’t do this now.”

The song ended and the lights went out. In the darkness, Dylan’s hand wrapped around the back of my neck and his lips found mine. I let myself fall into him just for a moment because, before I knew it, the lights were back on and the music was blaring once again.

“Let’s get out of here,” he whispered.

I followed him through the crowd to the back door of the bar. He glanced around to make sure no one was looking before we slipped through the door and into the back alleyway. In the cool night air, his skin was like a flame against mine. He pressed me against the wall and nipped at my bottom lip before his hungry mouth was wrestling with mine. He parted my lips with his tongue and as it slid inside, I forgot about Ella. I forgot what I had promised her, and what Dylan had promised her. All that mattered was the two of us, in this moment together.
