“Yeah, actually, I would.”

She hesitated for a moment. The bartender set my drink in front of me and I took a long sip. Grace eyed my glass suspiciously.

“Jack and Coke? How typical,” she said with an eye roll.

I smirked at her as I took another sip. I didn’t like everyone to know that sometimes I just fancied a non-alcoholic drink. I thought it might ruin my rockstar persona or something. It was probably stupid, but it was information I kept to myself.

“What are you drinking? Let me guess, a cosmo? Vodka soda?”

I noticed at that moment that Grace didn’t have a glass on the bar in front of her.

“I’ve had my fill for tonight, actually. I’m drinking water.”

She held up the bottle I hadn’t seen her holding. I felt my respect for her grow just a bit. A woman who knew her limits was incredibly sexy, especially when she was surrounded by women who clearly didn’t.

“Well, all your friends are wasted,” I said, looking towards the dance floor.

“Yeah, why do you think I’m over here by myself?”

“Are you going to sit back down?”

Grace rolled her eyes again. She had an impressive knack for making me feel very self-conscious when she did that. She hesitated for a moment before sitting back down on the stool next to me.

“Did you like the show?”

“I’m not going to sit here and make small talk with you,” she snapped.

I took another sip of my Coke and tried to use my glass to hide my smile. She was not going to be easy to crack, but I was going to give it my best shot anyway.

“Fine, what do you want to talk about?” I asked.

She shook her head at me and looked down at her hands, which were twirling her water bottle in between them.

“Come on, there must be something you want to say to me,” I pushed.

“There’s not. You know how I feel about you.”

“I’m an asshole, a jerk, a prick, anything else?”

“Selfish, arrogant, cocky.”

“Aren’t those last two pretty much the same thing?”

Grace started to stand from her seat again, but I grabbed her wrist before she could get too far.

“I’m joking, I swear. Sit back down.”

Reluctantly, Grace sat back down, but she gave me a legendary side-eye the entire time.

“I just don’t understand why you had to come here and ruin the weekend I had planned.”

“I ruined it? I thought I was making it better.”

“No, you actually ruined it. I spent months making plans. I puthoursinto this party.”

“And you think that a private concert with one of the most famous musicians in the world didn’t improve whatever plans you had made?”

“No, you’re right. You’re not cocky or arrogant at all.” I couldn’t help but smile at that. I felt the corners of my mouth turn up, and I tried to hide it again, but I knew I had failed when Grace shook her head at me.
