But she could enjoy herself for a little longer.

It was hard to keep track of time. Her heart was beating wildly.

His lips left hers and made a trail across her jawline. “Chills?” he murmured.

“Definite chills.”

His lips returned to hers with more force. This is where she should stop things.

Right here.

Only she wasn’t.

She didn’t usually kiss a guy on the first date, and she was full-on making out with Carson in a shower after a paint fight. This sort of thing was probably normal for him. Women must throw themselves at him all of the time. She wasn’t like that. She didn’t want to be some casual fling, especially since they’d have to work together. He probably had all sorts of wrong ideas about her now. She pressed her palms against his chest, this time to push away from him.

As though he’d read her mind, he abruptly lifted his head. His expression was concerned, almost stricken. His grip on her loosened. “I just thought of something. That project you wanted to do for needy students—that would have helped you and Matt, wouldn’t it?”

This was what he was thinking about while they’d been kissing—the service project? “Yes.” Her voice sounded husky. Far from normal.

“That’s why you wanted to do it in the first place, wasn’t it?”

Talking was good. Talking would help sanity return. She concentrated on the stream of water flowing down Carson’s shoulders instead of staring at his lips. “One of the reasons. School shopping was always hard on my mom. She felt guilty that we always had to do without things.”

Carson sighed. He cupped her face in his hands and leaned his forehead against hers. “I’m so sorry.” He gently kissed her cheek as though he was kissing tears away. “I was stupid.” He kissed her other cheek. “I was so, so stupid.” He said the phrase several more times while dropping kisses on her face. Each time, gently. Feather-light apologies. Teasing kisses.

She didn’t move. Sanity had completely fled. The softer his lips were on her cheeks, the more she wanted them back on her mouth. When they finally did return, she wrapped her arms around his neck to pull him closer.

A voice sounded from out in the house. “Carson?” Ricardo’s voice. He hadn’t left. Both Olivia and Carson turned toward the sound.

Carson whispered, “Did you lock the bathroom door?”

“No. I didn’t know we were going to get in the shower together.” Or do this. She dropped her arms from around him.

“Carson?” Ricardo was closer, in the master bedroom now.

Carson’s hands stayed on Olivia’s waist, as though reluctant to let go of her. He cursed under his breath.

She glanced at the door. “How are we going to explain that we’re in the shower together?”

“We could tell him we were washing off paint. It’s the truth.”

“The truth sounds suspicious.” The entire crew would talk about them and send her knowing looks. “Pretend you’re in here by yourself, and tell him you’re taking a shower.”

“He’ll wonder why I’m doing that here instead of at my house.”

Ricardo knocked on the door. “Olivia, is that you?” His voice sounded hopeful that it was.

“No,” Carson snapped. “It isn’t.”

A pause from the door. “Are you testing the shower? Is that why it’s on?”

Olivia didn’t wait to see if Ricardo was about to come in to help with the task. She darted out of the shower, grabbed her towel, and wrapped it around her while she dashed into one of the walk-in closets.

She didn’t think about the fact that she’d taken the only towel. She just didn’t want to face Ricardo or come up with an explanation that she couldn’t pull off. Her face burned with heat, and not because of the water temperature. She leaned against the door.

Carson turned off the shower. “Just a second,” he called. She heard his footsteps going across the floor. The door opened. Calmly, Carson said, “Yes, I was testing it. Works fine. What do you need?”

“You got into it while wearing jeans?”
