“Busy. It’s good to see you too, Sam.” She resumed her seat.

An hour later, she and Tess collapsed on their seats after being in a line dance. The band was cranking out the tunes.

As she glanced around the room, she smiled. Then the smile slipped when she saw Rhett walking through the crowd. Several stopped him to talk, and he did for a few minutes, then continued past them. She watched as he stood beside a table where Grant and Jessa Hunter sat, along with Landry and Kay O’Malley.

He was so handsome, and she could kill Erin and Tiffany for making her see it.

“Were you living in a cave?” she muttered.

“What?” Tess frowned at her.

“Nothing. Talking to myself.”

“I’m going to talk to Creed for a minute. I’ll be back.” Sam stood and then walked to the bar where Creed McBride sat.

Lucinda noticed Tess watching him, then seemed startled when she saw Lucinda staring at her.

“You are crazy about that man.”

“I will not deny that. Sam Garrett is my world.”

“He’s such a good man and loves you so much.”

“I know. Some days, I wonder how I got so lucky.”

“It was meant to be.”

Lucinda looked at Rhett again, but knew it wouldn’t end well once he learned the truth about her. She’d never want to see that look of disappointment on his face when she told him. It was the reason she couldn’t get involved with him.

It was two hours later when Karen and Seth left. Lucinda had tears in her eyes, hoping they kept in touch.

A slow song started, and everyone left the table to dance except for Lucinda. She about jumped out of her skin when someone touched her shoulder, and she looked to see Rhett beside the table.

“Would you like to dance?” he asked her.

“Uh, sure.”

Rhett laughed. “Well, don’t sound so damn happy about it.”

She couldn’t help but laugh. “Okay. Sure, I’d love to dance.”

Rhett chuckled and put his hand out to her. She took it and felt a zap, but he wasn’t looking at her when she glanced at him. So, maybe he didn’t feel it. He led her to the dance floor and turned her in his arms. Lucinda placed her hands on his shoulders. His were on her hips.Damn, he smelled good. The top of her head barely reached his chin. If she’d worn heels, it would’ve been better. They didn’t speak. Both seemed to enjoy the silence.

“Can I give you a ride home?” he murmured close to her ear.

Suppressing a shiver, she smiled. “I brought my SUV.”

“I suppose you did.”

She giggled. “How else would I get here, Rhett?”

“A date?”

“A date? And yet you asked to give me a ride home.”

“Well, if you were on a date, maybe he was an ass, and you need to leave without him.”

“Seriously?” Lucinda shook her head.
