“It’s not now. I told you I’ve been attracted to you for a long time, but you never seemed interested, so I didn’t say anything.”

“But, I mean, we’ve seen each other around, and you never let on.”

“Because I knew you thought of us as only friends.”

“I’ve never thought of you other than a friend.”

“Well, that certainly puts me in my place.”

“I didn’t mean it that way. I couldn’t think of you any other way, Rhett. There are some things you don’t know about me.”

“I don’t care about your past, Cin.”

“You would. Once you found out, you’d be disappointed. And it’s not just my past.”

“Why don’t you tell me and let me make up my own mind. Some people have pasts, or presents, they’re not pleased about, but everyone deserves a second chance. Do you want to go through life alone?”

Lucinda shook her head. “I don’t, but I don’t want to see pity or disappointment in a man’s face.”

“Tell me.”

She took a deep breath and gazed into his eyes.

“I can’t have children.”

“Are you telling me men broke up with you over that?”

“I can’t be sure. But it was never long after I told whoever I was dating at the time, that they disappeared. I don’t blame them.”

“Why, Cin? If a man loves you, he’ll take you any way he can get you.” He cocked his head. “I would.”

“For how long, Rhett?”

“For as long as you’d want me. Did these men know right away?”

“I didn’t lie to them in the beginning, if that’s what you’re asking,” she snapped.

“No, that’s not what I’m asking. When did you tell them?”

“Usually on the second date. I didn’t feel the need to hide it.”

“And no one wanted to be with you?”

“There were only three, and they sure didn’t argue.” She shook her head. “I got tired of being let down, Rhett, and why should I ask a man to accept that? Don’t you want kids of your own?”

“Honestly, yes, but we don’t always get what we want. Now I know, and it doesn’t change a damn thing, Cin. I’d like to get to know you as more than a friend. If it doesn’t work out, it’s not because you can’t have kids.” He shrugged. “It would be because we’re not made for each other. How will you find someone who will take you the way you are if you don’t try?”

Why not have some happiness in her life? Even if it didn’t last, she felt that if she fell in love with him, she’d love this man forever. When had he become so important to her? He’d been right in front of her for years. Rhett moved to sit beside her on the couch.

“I can go if this makes you uncomfortable, Cin. I don’t want to push you. I just wanted to let you know that—” He tucked her hair behind her ear.

“Just shut up and kiss me, Rhett.”

He seemed startled, but grinned.

“Yes, ma’am.”
