Rhett took her arm and turned her to face him.

“I can warm you up, Cin.”

When she smiled at him, he wanted to kiss her senseless.

“I have no doubt there, Rhett, but let’s take this slow. We’ve been friends for years. This is all new.”

“All right. Let’s get inside before my balls freeze.”

Cin laughed and he couldn’t help but chuckle.

Once inside the house, Lucinda removed her coat and hat, hung them on pegs and watched as Rhett did the same then they headed for the living room where a fire roared in the hearth.

She put her hands out in front of the fire to warm them, but she didn’t need the fire to make her warm, she knew Rhett was more than capable of doing that. She felt his hands on her shoulders then he whispered in her ear.

“I remember you saying we’d make out after the dogs were fed and watered.”

She turned to face him. “I didn’t say that.”

His eyebrow rose. “No?”

“No. You said you’d rather lay on the couch and make out, and I said we’d check the dogs.” She tried not to laugh at the expression on his face.

“First. You said, first.”

“Maybe I meant before we eat.”

“No. You did not.”

Lucinda burst out laughing. “I’m teasing you.”

“Hey, I like to be teased as much as the next man but not over this.”

“I see.” She toyed with the buttons on his flannel shirt. “I can tease you in other ways though, right?”

Rhett groaned. “As long as I can return the favor.”

“Is this happening too fast?” she asked with a frown.

“I said we’d take it slow, Cin. How slow is up to you.”

She slid her arms around his waist and stared into his eyes.

“Kiss me.”

“With pleasure,” he murmured before his lips touched hers and she felt it to her toes. When he broke the kiss, she felt such a loss, but he strode to the sofa, pulled the blanket off the back, and placed it on the floor in front of the fireplace then he picked her up, and placed her on it then stood and stared at her. “You’re so beautiful. I’ve always thought so.”

Lucinda got up on her elbows. “You did not.”

“Yes, I did. Even when I dated Heidi, but I was in love with her, and never said anything.”

She cupped his lightly whiskered cheek in her hand.

“She hurt you, didn’t she?”

“Yes. I wanted to marry her.”
