“Right?” He takes another drink, too, and then asks, “All right, what should we do now?”

Laughing a little, I say, “I honestly don’t know. This is the first time in five years I haven’t had Rae for a night. Literally can’t wrap my mind around the possibilities. The night is so young!”

He goes thoughtful for a few seconds, then grins and snaps a finger-gun at me. “I have exactly three video games and I bet you’ll like one of them a lot.”

I look at him quizzically. “Video games? You thinkIcould play avideo game?”

“For sure!” He walks past me and takes hold of my wrist as he goes. “Come on.”

Love the way his skin feels.

Thankfully, I don’t have long to think back on the dreams I’ve had of him before he’s showing me what is allegedly a Wii U. And I have to admit I’m intrigued when he pulls up a game calledYoshi’s Woolly World(“Little Abby Kinley got me this for my birthday this year—Bill laughed his ass off when I opened it!”). It looks cute.

And off we go.

He teaches me how to play a video game and it turns out to be a lot of fun.

We sip on our pumpkin beers and agree again and again that they’re tasty as hell.

Rae calls shortly after I have to stop with Yoshi’s yarn-throwing because my fingers hurt, which is about an hour after I usually have her in bed. I put her on speakerphone so Landon and I can both talk to her. All the girls in her class were invited to the sleepover, and she’s been having a blast.

“I love you, Rae,” I tell her when she says they’re all supposed to go to bed. “Night-night, baby. I’ll see you in the morning, okay?”

“Okay! I love you! Landon, I love you! Night-night!”

From beside me on the couch, he waves even though she can’t see him. “Goodnight! I love you, too! Big hugs!”

I try not to laugh at his wave until our call is over. I barely make it.

“What?” he asks with a grin. I wonder if he finds my laughter contagious, too.

“You waved at her!”

“Yeah, and I know she couldn’t see it, but I stand by it!”

Chortling, I drop my head back on the couch and close my eyes. “You are so silly.”

I feel him get comfortable right next to me, closer than he’s been all night, and drop his head back, too. “You like it.”

“I know.”

A relaxed silence falls between us.

The longer it stretches on, the better it feels.

I’ve had a great night. Rae is having a great night. Dinner was great and I’ve tried some new things.

I just feelgood.

“I’m happy,” I murmur after a few minutes.

He murmurs back, “Me, too.”

I feel his fingers curl into some of the hair over my shoulder and slowly smooth down it.

I’m shaken by a shiver I couldn’t fend off if I tried.

It makes my breath shake, too, as it moves all the way through me, down the back of my neck to the bottom of my spine and along my legs.
