I drop my mouth to her ear and say beneath the rain that I love her.

She huffs out that she loves me so much. Curls her other leg around me again. Grasps at my shoulders.

And I know this is what she needs. This is what’s going to do her in.

Having my body on hers like this is the opposite of a nightmare; it’s good, toogood, and she loves it because, yes, welove each other, and she trusts me.

I need this, too, I realize. Need to prove in this exact way that we’re stronger than the dark heartache in this world, whether it’s the kind she’s tried to escape her whole life or the kind that’s plagued me more recently.

She breathes my name so suddenly softly that it puts chill bumps on me.

She’s almost,almostthere.

The whisper I leave near her ear is soft, too, and unsteady, a plea in more than one way: “Hang on to me, sweetheart.”

She does. Hands, lips, all the rest of her cling to me until….

A jagged gasp from her and, “Landon.Landon.”

She gasps again as she comes, and then she moans—or me, maybe that’s me, because I’m coming, too, with a fiery spark, a deep chill—I exhale her name sharply as her fingertips dig into my skin, and we kiss hard. So hard. Ithasto be bruising, but it doesn’t stop us—even our wild breaths, even the shudders that finish us off don’t stop us. Because this….

I pull my arm out from under her knee and cage her face into my hands, and her leg goes back around me with the other one. As our hips still, we kiss fervently, desperately, again and again for what we’ve just done with each other, foreach other. Forourselves.

Unparalleled.

It was unparalleled.

The best sex ever because it wasn’tjustsex for either of us.

I should’ve known she would leave an indelible mark on me with this just like she has with her smile, her compassion, the words that come out of her mouth.

I feel something wet touch my right hand, and I finally stop kissing her so I can look at her. Her eyes are brimming with tears and one has escaped down her temple.

I’m not worried; there’s nothing but relief and love in her expression.

Indeed, she sighs contentedly, quite out of breath, “Good morning.”

My first wholehearted laugh in days.

It gets a brilliant smile out of her.

“Good morning,” I echo as I wipe at where the teardrop was. “And, um…Merry Christmas Eve, too, right?”

“Yeah.” She laughs, too.

After I roll us onto our sides, she pulls me in for a much gentler kiss than before.

Then she murmurs, “I…had no idea anything could feel that good. Thank you.”

I nod. “Honestly, I didn’t either. So thankyou.”

She gives a nod of her own. “Sorry I’m crying. I promise I’m not upset.”

“Nah, I know. We…” I have to swallow past a sudden small lump in my throat, “…well, we did what we always do, but it was much more significant this time.”

Her fingertips trailing up my back make me shiver.

She smiles before she asks, “What is it we always do?”
