“I’ll talk to you soon, yeah?”

With my own thumbs-up, I say, “Yes.”

He smiles and heads off in the direction of the elevator. I step back from the door, shut it, and turn the locks.

As I stare at it, I realize my pulse is a little fast.

I don’t understand why at first, but then I pay attention to my thoughts.

He touched my arm earlier. And then my hair. And then, just a minute ago, I hugged him.

And…

…I really am okay with it.

Briefly, I’m shocked. But then I’m happy.

I’m really doing it—I’m managing to be his friend.

I smile to myself, then turn away to go change my bloody clothes and make sure Princess Rae doesn’t need anything.

“Morning, morning, morning,” Bill greets me as I enter his office on Tuesday.

“Hey, Bill.” I drop down into the empty chair near his desk. “How’s it going?”

He’s been typing away on his computer, but he pauses to smile at me. “Really great. Really, really great. Give me one more minute and I’ll tell you what I had you come in early for.”

“Sure thing.” I focus on my iced coffee and listen to him type, click, click, type, type, type….

Yesterday, he pulled me aside and asked if I could come in before work today for a talk. He didn’t seem angry or worried, but he wouldn’t tell me what to expect, either. He’s never asked for a private meeting in all the years I’ve worked here, so I don’t quite know what to think.

I don’t have to wait long for him to finish up on his computer. In what feels like a literal minute, he declares, “Done!”

I look at him and see he’s getting more comfortable in his chair, his elbows on his desk. He looks at me, too, with something like…pride?

Before I can inquire about it, he starts talking again.

“All right, I’m going to jump right in because I had a hard enough time not calling and saying this yesterday.” He inhales deeply and opens his hands in a,‘Ta da!’sort of way. “The bar is getting a second location!”

My mouth falls open before I exclaim, “What?Awesome!”

“Yeah!” He grins and claps once. “Woo!”

“Congratulations! I didn’t know you were even looking into that!”

“Well,” he sighs now, “I didn’t want to say a lot about it and have it not work out. We get damn good business here, but there’s more to it than one would think, you know, when it comes to expansion.”

“For sure. Whole new set of responsibilities, bills, staff….”

“Exactly. I wanted to be sure I knew what I was doing before I opened my mouth.” He clears his throat. “Until right now, Shannon and the guys handling the planning have been the only ones to know anything. I wanted you to be the first person I told when it was finalized because—” he gives me that same proud look from before, “—I’m giving you dibs on the manager position I’m opening up here. I’m going to run the other location since it’s closer to home, so I need someone to be in charge here, and you’re my first choice.”

My mouth falls open again.

Manager?

Bill wants to make me amanager? He wants to make methemanager of this bar?
