“Wait.”

He stopped and turned around. “Yeah?”

“Will your girlfriend be okay with this? Me coming over?”

Wilson frowned. “Girlfriend? I don’t have a girlfriend.”

“But…the girl—”

“Oh no,” Wilson laughed and pointed his thumb at his door again. “That’s Delilah, my baby sister. She’s staying with me until she gets her own place. She won’t mind. She’s actually the one who sent me over here to check on you,” he admitted, rubbing the back of his head.

“Oh.” I sucked in my bottom lip and chewed on it. Strangely enough, knowing he didn’t have a girlfriend made all of this better. I didn’t want to intrude in their privacy.

“You’ll love her. She’s a sweetheart.”

I smiled and nodded. “Okay. See you later.”

He disappeared with a wink of his eye, and I turned away to head back into my apartment to go take a shower and dress more appropriately.

About thirty minutes later I was in Wilson’s apartment, with his sister introducing herself to me. She was so beautiful and had the same dark blue eyes as Wilson. You could see it from a mile away that they were siblings.

“So nice to meet you. I was always rushed in here instead of saying hi to you when I saw you in the hall.”

I smiled at her and shook my head, not wanting her to be sorry for giving others space. “It’s okay. I really love your hair,” I told her, admiring her golden hair.

“Oh stop it. Look at yours!”

I had straightened it before coming here and I even put on a little bit of makeup, but I didn’t feel as pretty as she was. I still thanked her.

She squeezed my hand before pulling me toward the kitchen where Wilson was standing by the stove. When he heard us come in, he turned his head to look at us, then his eyes met mine and something about his expression changed. He looked…amazed. “Damn.”

“Right? That’s what I thought when I first saw her,” Delilah said with a soft laugh. “Wilson’s making stir-fry.”

“Sounds delicious,” I said, smiling at them. “It smells great in here.”

“Thank you. How about you get her something to drink, Del?”

“What would you like? We have basically everything.”

I pursed my lips. “Water’s fine for now.”

Delilah went to fill a glass and handed it to me, and I took a few sips after thanking her.

We stood by the counter while Wilson finished cooking, and once we were all seated at the round table in the smalldining area, we started eating and I listened to stories about their childhood. Safe to say they truly loved each other, and it was nice to know that at least some people in this world had a family they loved and could rely on. Wilson was a great guy and Delilah was the sweetest and funniest person I had ever met, and I was glad to have accepted Wilson’s invite for tonight. Without getting my hopes too high, I wished for nights like these to reoccur in the near future. It definitely helped to forget about Ricky’s death, and maybe, with Wilson’s help, I could also forget about the strange feelings I felt every time The Beak crossed my mind.

HADLEY

2 months later

He was standing in my room again. The Beak had been visiting me in my dreams for the past couple of weeks now, and every time he appeared, I felt this intense sensation of excitement and confusion. The last few times he was here, he touched my body again the way he had done the night of Ricky’s murder, and while these past times I hadn’t been awake, his touch felt just as real.

I could’ve easily woken myself up and stopped that dream from happening, but something deep down in me forced me to stay asleep. I stared at him, taking in his cape and mask. He stood there in silence. Not that I expected him to talk anyway. His head was tilted to the side as he stared back at me, and I patiently waited for him to come to me.

“What are you waiting for? I’m right here.”

I had lost my mind a while ago because of this man, and while I tried my best not to let him take over my life, I couldn’t help but let him close whenever he came to visit in my dreams.
