“We will win this battle yet,” he states with a smile that makes my stomach flutter.

“Yes, but the question is, at the end, who will win the war?”

CHAPTER 6

On our way back home, we come across what seems like a whining noise coming from one of the densest parts of the forest. “What is that?” I ask, covering my ears as the noise seems to penetrate right through my being. Drez doesn’t answer, but his hands are also over his ears as he takes a couple steps towards the sound but then stops. Turning towards me, he shakes his head, inclining his head back towards the path home.

I shake my head, wanting to go investigate, but he simply glares at me. I swear he is the most irritating man. “We need to see what it is,” I say, screaming the words, but he shakes his head. Huffing, I turn back the way we came and continue making my way home. When I can take my hands from my ears without the sound being overload, I stop and turn towards Drez.

“That sound has never been there before. We need to go see what it is. Maybe that’s the cause of these shadows appearing and the portal being closed.”

“I will inform Brog. He will send me to come and investigate.”

“Are you scared?” I ask sarcastically, which has him glaring at me, but he doesn’t answer.

We make the rest of the way home without another word to each other. As we walk in, Drez walks up the stairs towards the rooftop where Brog will be, and I make my way towards the sitting room where Braun was, only to find Shok walking out.

Shok is Gargoyle through and through, but he is the sweetest Gargoyle I have ever met. “How is he?” I ask, only to have him raise his finger to his lips.

“Shhh,” he whispers. “Love fell asleep.”

I incline my head to look into the room to find Love lying on the couch with a blanket over her that I’m guessing Shok placed there. I look towards Braun still on the ground to find his eyes closed.

Looking back at Shok, I grin. “You’re a softy, do you know that?” I tease, only to hear him grunt as he continues on his way out. Instead of going inside, I decide to follow Shok. “There was a strange noise in the forest,” I say as we step outside through the back door. Shok stops and looks at me. Only now do I realize that most of the other men are working on the area around the house, placing huge crystal quartz outside. Looking at where they are placing the clear crystal stones, I realize that when the lights are on inside the house they will reflect off the crystals, lighting up the whole area.

“What noise?” At Shok’s question, I am brought back to our conversation.

“I don’t know. Drez didn’t want to go investigate.” I place my hands on my hips, looking up at him. “It was never there before, and it’s really loud and penetrating. We need to see what it is. We should have gone to see where it comes from.”

Shok shakes his head. “It could have been dangerous with you there. I am sure Brog will arrange for us to go see.”

I glare at him. “Whose side are you on? I can take care of myself, you know.”

His lips turn up, and then he grins at me. “Yep, you are a real warrior,” he teases, which has me placing my hands on my hips. “He was just protecting you, squirt.” Lifting his hand, he tweaks my nose, using the name he gave me when I was a kid and that he uses when he wants to tease me. I try to smack his hand away, but he’s faster than me. “You have to be faster than that,” he quips as he turns to make his way towards one of the crystal quartz.

“I’m not a child anymore, you know,” I mutter as I follow him, only to have him grin over his shoulder at me.

“Really? I never noticed,” he says as he winks at me playfully. Since I was a child, I have always gotten on well with Shok. He has always treated me like an older brother would, and I see him as one. He stops next to Bain, who is turning the quartz to catch the rays of the sun. Bain is our very own Dragon; he is one of the last descendants and a force to be recon with when he gets angry.

“Hi, Bain.”

His hypnotic green eyes turn towards me, and he smiles. His long midnight-black hair obscures some of his features as it falls over his face, but it doesn’t detract from his rugged good looks. His body, like the other men, is well-toned and big.

“Is this going to work?” I ask as I look at the stone that is half my size. They must have gone this morning into the underground Cave of Life to bring back these crystals, because we never had them before, and the Cave of Life is filled with crystals all over. The energy there is pure and healing.

“It should. If the deterrent is light, then the quartz will do its job until we find a way to get rid of these shadows,” Bain says. We are still chatting a couple minutes later when Drez comes outside, followed by Brog.

“Shok, I need you to go with Drez and Zain.”

“Are they going to investigate that sound, Brog?” I ask as Shok walks towards where Drez is. I see Zain approaching from the other direction.

“Yes, they are going to try to get closer to it to find out where it is coming from.”

“Can I go?”

“No,” Drez says before Brog can reply, which has me glaring at him.

“I wasn’t asking you,” I snap back.
