“I will take the first watch just in case someone comes up or down the stairs,” Trek says as he looks around the enclosure.

“Don’t worry about that. I can close the entrance with vines. No one will find us in here,” Hope says as she looks over her shoulder at Trek.

“Well, who said it wasn’t good to have gifted fairies around?” Shok quips as he grins at Hope.

“Careful, or I will tie you up with the vines too,” Hope teases as she walks to the door, stopping when she encounters Trek in her way. “You need to get out of the way for me to do this.” Trek steps inside, but I can see that he doesn’t relish the fact of being in here. Does he have an issue with confined spaces? I don’t ask, but I keep an eye on him.

Shok lights a little oil lamp in the corner that allows for just enough light in the enclosure for us to see each other. Hope kneels at the entrance, placing her hands on the ground, focusing. A couple minutes later, there are vines growing up to the top, completely closing off this area.

“I’m hungry,” Love says as she takes a seat on one of the chairs. “Maybe I’ll just go to sleep so I can forget about it.” I can see her disgruntled features in the dim light. Shok walks up behind Love’s chair and strokes her head gently.

“Maybe Hope can whip something up,” Shok says as Hope approaches.

“What can I whip up?” she asks as she comes to stand before Love’s chair.

“Shok was thinking that maybe you could get us something to eat like you did with the apples,” I reply, and she frowns.

“What do you think I am, mother nature?” she asks as she looks around at us. “You do know we aren’t on the ground, as we have been upstairs, and the only reason I was able to get the vines is because vines grow through any crack.”

“It’s okay, Hope. We can wait for tomorrow,” Love says with a gentle smile.

“I have something that I bought for Dream, but there are enough for the three of you. It’s nothing that will fill you up, but it might put a smile on your faces,” Drez says, which has me glancing over at him to see him pulling something out of his pocket. And then he holds them up. There are three lollipops just like the ones I love eating.

“Oh, you got those for me?” I am so pleased with the lollipop that I place my arms around his waist and hug him. I feel him tense, but just as I am about to pull away, his arms come around me and he is hugging me back. When I pull away, I look up at him to see him smiling. “Thank you. I haven’t had one of these in a while.”

“I know,” he murmurs, handing me one. He then hands Hope and Love the others.

“Thank you,” Love and Hope murmur. I see Trek looking around, and then he walks towards one of the chairs and takes a seat.

“What did you learn from the guards?” he asks, looking at Shok.

“They think that there is an infiltrator in the kitchen.” I was right in my assumptions. “They say that the sovereigns were taken and thrown in the pit, but only after they were tied and a chain with a stone was placed around their necks.”

“Does that mean they are alive?” I ask.

“Of course they are alive,” Hope mutters as she takes the chair next to Trek as she opens the lollipop before popping it into her mouth.

“Yes, they were alive when they were thrown in the pit, but the sovereign king was injured.” At Shok’s statement, I feel my heart lurch in fear. Oh no, if he was injured by one of the shadows, he might be evil by now. The thought of my father being anything but the caring, joking father that he is is unbearable. My parents, even though different, are mates, which means if one dies, the other will soon follow, as they will have no will to continue.

“How badly?” Love asks, looking at Shok as he takes the last chair next to her.

“I don’t know.”

“Maybe we should take a chance and just try to make it to them tonight,” I say, only to hear the men disagree immediately.

“If the sovereign king is wounded, we wouldn’t be able to help him in his condition if we’re fighting whatever is out there too,” Drez states as he takes a seat on the mattress. “Come sit down, Dream. You must be tired.”

I know he is right, and if we did get attacked while trying to rescue my parents when injured, it might get them and ourselves killed. Approaching the mattress, I take a seat next to Drez.

“The best thing to do is to try to get some rest, and when we wake up, we go,” Trek states. Drez inclines his head behind him.

“Sleep. You will feel better when you wake up,” he murmurs to me.

“What about you?” I ask. The mattress is small and will only fit one person. Even with my small stature, we won’t fit two of us on here.

He slides off the bed until his back is against the mattress, his head leaning back against it. “I will be fine” I feel guilty for taking the only mattress in the room, but when I look at the others, I see Trek has sat on the floor with his back against the wall, his legs stretched out. Hope has stretched out next to him, her head on his lap. Those two are like cats and dogs, but then you see them like that.

Looking over at Shok, I see him placing the four chairs next to each other. Then he inclines his head towards them for Love to lie down. Once she has stretched out carefully on them, he sits down on the ground, his back against the chairs, his head back, leaning against Love’s side. I sigh and then stretch out on the mattress and close my eyes. Tomorrow is not written yet. All we have is now and the hope that everything will go well.
