“Me?” How can they think I can do something like that? It’s one thing doing it in someone’s mind. How would I do it without having a dream to fix?

“Reality has a point; you have done it many times. I am sure that it can’t be very different from projecting light in a dream,” Love says as she looks over her shoulder at me.

“Are you serious? It’s all in my mind when I work on someone’s dream, but what you are talking about, I actually have to produce light.”

“You can try,” Hope says with a smile.

“Oh, you guys are barking up the wrong tree,” I mutter as I try to think how I could possibly project light into reality. “But I will try.”

“Oh, yay,” Love says as she leans over Brog’s covered legs and hugs me close.

“Don’t get too excited before I actually get this right,” I mumble.

“It’s good that you will try, but the fact still remains that we don’t know what these shadows are or why they are in Eternity Fae Forest. I worry that these shadows will try to attack one of you,” Brog says.

“Do you think that is what they want?” Love asks with concern in her voice.

“There is something else I need to tell you.”

I groan. How many secrets are there?

“I know. I’m sorry that it’s me telling you this. I know your parents wanted to be the ones to tell you, but in light of what is happening, I think it’s important you all know the truth.” Brog lifts his hand and starts to pat the bed next to him as he looks at Reality. When she finally takes a seat, he pats her hand before looking at us again. “You know that your parents had a hard time when they first met, but the problems weren’t just because of one being a Fairy and the other being a Gargoyle, because as soon as your mother gave herself to your dad, her magic enhanced his, which let him be the most powerful Gargoyle in existence.”

“We all know that. It’s so romantic,” Love says with a cheeky smile.

“Yes, it is, but it’s not that,” Brog says. “If anything happens to your parents, you girls need to be strong enough to combat any contestant who wants to be the next sovereign.”

“What?” Vein asks as she stands. “Brog, only the strongest of the strong challenge for the sovereign.” She points around the room. “Do we look like we can win any challenge one of the others put forward?”

“Maybe not at the moment, but you all have your mother’s and your father’s strength in you, and no one else in this kingdom has ever been able to beat them.”

“But, Brog, we aren’t our parents,” Reality says with a shrug.

“No, you are more powerful.”

“How would you know that?” Love asks as she continues to stroke Beast’s head.

“The oracle told your parents when they got together that they would have five daughters and that their daughters would be gifted with great powers, but that those powers attracted envy and betrayal. That is why they have you growing up here in the Eternity Fae Forest, protected from all evil.”

“Well, it looks like evil found us,” Vain mutters. “So basically you are telling us that we need to figure out what our powers are and do it quickly because our future seems to have caught up to us.” She shakes her head in anger. Rising, she makes her way to the door and then leaves.

“I’m sorry, but your parents thought it better that you only be told when you got your wings, but it seems that the time has come for you to know the truth.”

“Well, I’m sure we don’t need to worry. We will figure a way to breach the spell that is stopping us from leaving, and then we will find out what is going on,” Hope says.

“We have the best men here to protect you. They will die before they let anything happen to any of you. This evil that has breached our borders will be conquered, and we will rise above them.”

I stand. I know that this isn’t Brog’s fault, but I really don’t want to hear any more about this enemy. I think that the time has come to try to become the best I can be with whatever gifts I have, and for that, I am going to need to practice. The thing is, what am I practicing? Because I don’t even know where to start.

“I’m going now. Thank you for telling us, Brog,” I say as I also turn and make my way outside. I have had enough of being inside the whole day. If what they say is true, then the shadows only attack at night. Looking up at the sky, I sigh. It is early afternoon, and the sun is still high up in the sky. I need to think, and the best place for me to do that is by the pond.

I make my way through the forest towards the pond. I hear the animals scattering away as I walk, the fragrance of the forest surrounding me. I will talk to Minna for a while. She always helps me see perspective. Minna has been my friend since I was a child. I met her one day while swimming in the pond, and ever since, we have been friends. Minna is an Elven. Her family and her look after the pond and its surroundings. It is beautiful here, with flowers growing all around the pond. Animals always come to drink from it at one time or another.

“Minna,” I call as I sit on my favourite rock and slip my feet into the water. I start to twirl my feet around in the water, knowing that the disturbance will get someone’s attention, and they will soon come to investigate.

“Okay, okay, you have my attention. You can stop now,” Minna says as she comes out of the water a few feet ahead of where I am sitting, her long brown hair floating on the water behind her.

“About time, too. I was nearly falling asleep waiting for you,” I tease, which has Minna splashing me with water. “Hey.” I laugh.
