“This better be good,” he snaps, I see Colborn leaning against the doorframe smiling. It is obvious that he knows that he interrupted us and is finding this extremely amusing which in turn has Haldor’s scowl deepening with anger.

“There is a delivery truck outside filled with things that you ordered, were you bored by any chance?” he asks in amusement.

“You interrupted us to tell me a delivery guy is outside?” Haldor asks, Colborn’s grin widens, it is clear that he is enjoying this.

“I would love to say yes, but Dag is trying to get hold of you. If you answered your phone I wouldn’t need to be here.” I see Haldor’s angry expression changing into one of concern.

“Is there a problem with Tor?” he asks.

“Not so much as we can expect, but Draco and Bion are there, so he will be kept in check” Colborn replies as he starts to turn.

“How did Draco find out so soon?” Haldor asks stopping Colborn from walking away.

“Dag contacted Bion on the way to the hospital, an hour after Tor and Dag arrived at the hospital Bion was there with Draco.” Colborn explains.

“Tor will be livid, but it’s a good thing Draco is there because he will be the only one able to control Tor if need be.” Haldor says, “We will come and get the parcels once I phone Dag back and see what he wants.” Colborn nods and walks away, Haldor steps inside to close the door and slides his phone from his back jeans pocket.

“I’m going to phone Dag and see what’s up, then I have a surprise for you” he lowers his head to kiss me on the top of my head as he places his phone to his ear.

“Hey Bro, you are looking for me?” I can hear Dag say something as Haldor pulls away to go sit on the edge of the bed. He looks at me, then wiggles his eyebrows as he purposefully gazes up and down at my body making my cheeks burn with color as I see the heat in his eyes.

“What?” he asks as he suddenly frowns, “what are you saying?” I see anger start to replace the passion in his expression as he once again gazes at me. “Are you sure?” he asks and then nods at Dag’s reply before he stands and starts to pace.

“Fuck” he suddenly shouts, “I should have killed every single motherfucker when I had the chance.” I don’t know what is happening, but Haldor is clearly livid as he pulls the phone away from his ear. He stands in the middle of the room staring down at his phone, every muscle in his body vibrating with tension as he slowly looks up at me.

“What’s wrong?” I ask as I walk towards him to place my hands on his chest, hating the feeling of hopelessness that overwhelms me in seeing him like this and not knowing how to help him. It is clear that whatever Dag said to him has deeply angered him. His eyes intense as they scan my features.

“You know Dag has been looking into everyone you gave us names for?” I nod as his question has my stomach tensing when I realize that whatever Haldor is upset about has to do with my family.

“As he delved into each one of those names, he uncovered a trend which most of them have,” Haldor explains as he raises his hand to stroke my cheek. “They have all been arrested at one time or another for human trafficking.”

I frown at his statement, what does he mean human trafficking? I know that most of the men were up to no good, and I’m not that innocent that I didn’t know that they were involved in a lot of criminal activities, but they wouldn’t be involved in human trafficking, would they? I shake my head as I try to think back to anything that might evidence that they had anything remotely suspicious that indicated human trafficking.

“I don’t think so,” I say, “my father would never allow for something like that” as soon as the words are out of my mouth, I am doubting them as I know that Papa would do anything if the money is right. Haldor frames my face with his hands to look deep into my eyes, I can see the anger still clearly defined in his features. Does he also blame me for the fact that some of the men at camp were involved in such an obnoxious human activity?

“I think your father is not only the leader in your community, but he is very well aware of what is happening, and he is involved in it.” I bite my bottom lip wondering if mama knows about it? She has never been the caring, tender loving mother that a girl expects growing up, but she is my mother and I respect her for that, she has a lot of responsibilities as the leader’s wife and not much time for my winning as she used to tell me.

“I never saw anyone?” I whisper, thinking back.

“There is more,” he warns, whatever he has been told has upset him because the man before me looks like he is ready to commit murder. “When Dag started to dig he got suspicious, therefore he started to dig deeper and contacted some of our connections in different places” Haldor shakes his head as he glances towards the bed, then inclines his head towards it.

“Come, let’s sit down so I can tell you what he has found.” He is clearly uncomfortable in telling me what they have found, which just makes me more apprehensive. Sitting on the edge of the bed I rub my hands up and down my upper arms trying to calm the foreboding that is starting to fill my every sense.

“When Dag looked into your father, he found that at the time of your birth he was in jail. He couldn’t possibly be your father as he had been arrested two years before you were conceived.” This revelation is like a punch in my stomach, I don’t know what to believe. Is it possible that my father isn’t my father?

“Also, the woman that you call mother cannot be your mother.”

“Wha…what?” My mouth feels like sandpaper, everything that I believe about myself is suddenly being turned on its head. This can’t be true, surely if they weren’t my parents, they wouldn’t have kept me.

“The woman that you know as your mother had an accident when she was a teenager, her reproductive system was severely damaged to the point where they had to extract her ovaries.” His statement has me gasping as I think of the scars that mama has. I secretly thought that my father was the culprit of most of her scars as he used to be abusive when he drank too much. Since he stopped drinking, I have been told that he had calmed down a lot from the way he was before.

“That’s not possible,” I whisper, but deep down I know that what he is saying is true because there has always been a feeling of being out of place. A tear slips down my cheek which Haldor wipes away with his thumb.

“Don’t cry my Angel, they don’t deserve it” he murmurs as he pulls me against his chest.

“Who am I?” I murmur against his chest, my head a racing jumble of thoughts.

“I don’t know yet, but I promise we will find out.” I don’t know what to think, I don’t know what I’m feeling. Everything I believed, everything I have thought has been a lie. I don’t know how long we sit on the edge of the bed simply holding each other without talking, just the jumble of thoughts and the pain of feeling everything I know crashing down around me.
