Fine. I guess we’re doing this.

“Are you working with Morano?”

No answer.

I pull the gun from my back and set it on the table in front of me, then place my hands in my lap and lean back in the chair. He looks around the room then brings his fingers to pinch the bridge of his nose. That’s right, asshole. You’re fucked.

He sighs. “You told me to watch the girl, so I was there, watching the girl.”

I cock my head to one side and study him. Not because I need to determine whether or not he’s telling the truth—I know he’s not—but because I need to decide whether or not to leave him alive.

“That’s unfortunate.”

“What’s unfortunate?”

“That after all these years of working for my father, you still haven’t learned how to tell the fucking truth,” I reply, taking my gun from the table and placing it in my lap.

He scoots to the edge of the bed, his fingers nervously pulling at the hem on the sleeve of his button-up shirt. As if the mere thought of what’s going through my mind intimidates him. And he’s right. It should.

“Morano has Dave in his pocket. He uses him to get access to your guns. Dave needed someone on the inside to help because he said you were onto him. Morano thinks Dave’s afraid of you. He’s worried it’s going to affect him trying to take over your business. I was there trying to get information. I didn’t know anything about the girl being involved. I swear.”

“Was the problem at the port a diversion to distract Franco?”

“If it was, I had nothing to do with it.”

I know how to spot a lie, and he’s telling the truth. Too bad that won’t save his life. He left Makenna alone. Regardless of his intentions, he disgraced our family name by meeting with Morano’s guy. Those are sins he’ll pay for in blood.

“You’ve been helpful. And I’m in a good mood, so I’m gonna give you a break.”

He heaves a sigh of relief, and I can practically hear his butt cheeks unclenching to let go of his underwear.

“I’ll give you a choice. Your gun or mine.”

He swallows hard. Every ounce of color drains from his face at the recognition that he isn’t leaving this room alive. “Please, Cal,” he says, damn near falling to his knees on the floor in front of me. “You don’t have to do this.”

“I don’t do begging. Unless it’s my girl. Then, that’s a different story…” My mind drifts off for a split second. Then, I continue. “Here’s the deal. I’m going to walk out of this room and stand outside the door. You have thirty seconds. If I don’t hear a gunshot, I promise you, I’ll be back. And they’ll need your teeth to recognize you.”

Tiny beads of sweat form on his forehead, and tears gather in the bottom of his eyes, threatening to spill over at any moment. I almost feel sorry for him, but traitors aren’t worth my pity. He’s not even worth my bullets, so I’m hoping he goes with option A.

“You can kill me but that won’t stop him. He’ll just find someone else.”

“Then, I’ll kill them too. I’ll kill every one of my goddamn men and run this motherfucker by myself if that’s what it takes.” I pat his shoulder and smile, then I turn and walk toward the door. “You have thirty seconds.”

One down, two to go.

It’s turning out to be a busy morning.

Dave just pulled into the parking lot at the warehouse. My adrenaline kicks in. A grin tugs at the corners of my mouth. I shouldn’t enjoy this as much as I do but vengeance is in my blood. It’s who I am.Except when I’m with her.

He doesn’t notice me getting out of my Rover and walking slowly toward him. He’s oblivious as he clicks a button on his key fob, making his headlights flash as he locks his truck.

I close the distance between us, every step bringing me closer to that moment when I watch dread sweep over his features.

He freezes when he finally sees me. His expression tells me his mind is trapped somewhere between recognition and fear. And there it is.That’s exactly where I want him.
