John agreed to have my party at his place. He has a three-story townhome on Magazine Street with a gated courtyard. There are twinkle lights strung from the trees and a portable bar against the brick wall. It’s perfect. I’m in the middle of setting out fruit bowls at a mimosa bar when Callisto walks up. My eyes soak in every inch of his raw masculinity as he steps into the courtyard.

“Am I too early?” he asks, then kisses my forehead.

“Hey,” I say once I manage to remember where I am and what I’m doing here. He does that to me.

He brushes his thumb down my cheek. “Hi.”

I run my hand up his chest, the smooth fabric of his dark gray dress shirt is cool to the touch. It’s unbuttoned at the top, exposing just the right amount of tanned flesh. My eyes linger there, and every part of me burns. I lift myself up onto my tiptoes and press my lips against his.

His lips touch mine as they part, but his tongue doesn’t go inside. He moves his hands to my hips. His fingers dig into my flesh as he urges me to move. “Turn around, Makenna.” There’s a trace of emotion in his voice that I haven’t heard before now. Regret? Apprehension? I can’t tell.

I do as he says. He presses his body against mine and my breath hitches. He’s hard. It’s a trigger, sending hunger flaring up my spine, prickling my skin. I’m wet. So wet. And he has my panties.

He leans forward, his mouth just inches from my neck. “You think I don’t want to kiss you right now? That I don’t want to fuck you, right now?”

My lungs open up, and my breath finds its way back out, heavy and labored. I forget my own name. My tongue darts out to wet dry lips.

He pushes himself into me. I’m vibrating with need. “Control, Makenna. Without it, you become vulnerable.” He inhales a deep breath through his nose as he digs his fingers in my hips. “I would drop down on my knees, bury my face in your cunt and worship you if you asked.” His teeth graze the delicate skin on my neck. “But I won’t do it at the expense of your safety.”

“My safety? What does that even mean?” I ask, pulling away as I turn to face him. “It’s just a kiss, Callisto.” I try to unlock the mystery behind his actions and words, but as usual, deep, black irises keep me in the dark. The knife lesson. The sudden concern about my well-being. The things Eva said. There’s a meaning behind his words, behind this wall he’s erecting around us. I want to know what it is. “Is there something you aren’t telling me?”

He reaches behind his neck like he’s attempting to rub away built-up tension. “There doesn’t have to be a reason. I will nevernotwant to protect you, angel.” He keeps his eyes focused on mine. Then, he raises his hand to my chin, slowly tipping it upward with one finger. I recognize his efforts to control his reactions—the strain in his muscles, the tight clench of his jaw, the way he stares at me with heated intensity. That type of control only comes from years of practice, practice I haven’t mastered yet. I catch the bob of his Adam’s apple as he swallows. “Today is about celebrating you. Enjoy your party.” He presses a soft kiss against my lips. “And when we get home,I’mgoing to enjoyyou.”

He saidhome.

Warmth spreads across my skin. “Okay.” It’s a simple word, but even my rebellious brain can’t come up with a single argument for what he just said.

A smile plays on his lips, releasing a little more of the tension. “The food is here.”

“What’s next? You’re going to change into tights and stop a meteor? Activate a secret passage into a high-tech underground workshop? Tell me there’s something you need to show me? An insect bite? Some superhuman secret?”

He chuckles, low and deep in his throat. “Not quite.”

“How do you know the food is here?”

His lips quirk. “I smell it.”

Oh. Right.

Jaxon walks through the glass-paned French doors leading inside the house. He hikes a thumb over his shoulder. “I just dropped off a shit ton of food back there. I thought maybe you could help me sort out what goes where.”

I couldn’t think of a better restaurant to cater my party than Suppato’s.

“I’ll do it,” Callisto says, then nods at Brynn, who just walked up. “You have guests.”

“Thank you,” I tell him as he kisses the top of my head. “And thank you,” I say to Jaxon.

“So, how does it feel to have letters behind your name?” Brynn asks, pulling my attention from Callisto.

Makenna Taylor, R.N.

I still have to take the NCLEX. “Well, it’s not official yet, but it feels pretty freaking good.”

“I’m really fucking proud of you, Maks.” Her face beams. “What’s next? Big hospital gig? A sex-cation with the Italian Stallion?”

“Honestly, I think I’m going back to school.” I didn’t realize it until today, but now that the idea is there, it won’t go away.I want more.
