They don’t need to be nervous. They need to be afraid. If I don’t walk out of here with Makenna alive and breathing, someone is going to pay.

“Maybetheyshould do their goddamn job or get out of the fucking way and let someone else do it.”

Becca places her hand on my chest and takes a step toward me. My skin prickles at the thought of anyone touching me other than Makenna. My body ishertemple. I was made forhersalvation, not anyone else’s. I glance down at where Becca touches me, and my eyes narrow in warning.

She pulls her hand away. “I cared about her too, you know.”

“Cared.” My voice is calm, numbed by the shock rippling through my bloodstream.

“What?”

“You saidcared. Past tense.” My mind moves in slow motion while my body bursts with adrenaline. Fear snaps my bones. Panic slams into me. I storm past Becca and toward the double doors.

“Cal, you can’t go back there.”

Fuck that.

Fuck her.

Fuck rules.

Our story isn’t over.

It doesn’t end here.

“I dare you or anyone else to stop me.”

I press metal squares on the walls, skid down hallways, opening door after door, screaming her name as if she’ll answer. It’s a fraction of a second in time that seems drawn out into eternity. My eyes scan every name tag on every door until the letters blend together. White tiles spread for miles it seems. Doctors and nurses are a blur.

Then, I find her.

She’s in ICU with tubes and machines coming out of her, going into her, all around her. She’s unconscious. But she’s alive.I exhale. My body relaxes. A machine monitors her heartbeat, weak but steady. A thin sheet covers her slender body. It’s pulled down around her waist while a Velcro belt wraps around her belly, then hooks to a monitor beside the bed. She must be cold.

“Get her a goddamn blanket,” I yell at anyone who’s close enough to hear.

A man about my age walks up. A light blue cap covers his hair. He’s wearing the same blue scrubs Makenna wears to work every day. He peers up at me through dark-rimmed glasses. “This is a sterile environment. You can’t be in here.”

I glare down at him. “Try and make me leave.”

Becca rushes in behind me, out of breath. “Cal—”

I snap my gaze at her. “You saidcared.”

“I know. I’m sorry. She coded, and then—” She closes her eyes for a moment. “It was a mistake.”

I lost her. However brief. Whatever happened. I lost her.

“You work in a goddamn hospital. That’s a pretty big fucking mistake.” I’ll have her fired by tomorrow.

The man speaks up. “Sir, you’re disturbing the patients. I’m going to need you to wait outside.”

I walk forward, pushing him backward until he’s pinned against the nurse’s station. “Give me one of those ugly yellow frocks to cover my clothes, wrap my shoes, douse me in antiseptic, call the motherfucking president—I don’t care what the fuck you have do. I’m. Not. Leaving.”
