Makenna is staring up at me with tears running down her cheeks. I hadn’t realized I was reading the card out loud. One look at her, and I break. I fucking shatter.

She wants this.

“I know you can’t see it now, but we can bring laughter back into these walls. We can bring back the light, if you’ll just let us,” she says quietly.

She’s right. She’s always right. Makenna has this way of drawing me out of the darkness like no one else can. She makes me want to be a better man. For her, and now for our child.

I climb on top of her and settle between her legs. “Okay.”

Her eyes light up. “Okay?”

I nod. “Okay.”

My mother’s home is now our home away from home. We’ll come here as often as she likes. We’ll start a family. And I’ll try my best to be fuckingnormalfor her.

She’s standing at the balcony off my bedroom and staring out into the garden that runs along the side of the property. Her naked body is wrapped in my sheet and covered in my scent—just the way I like it. The breeze whips through her long blonde hair and forces her to clutch the sheet tighter to her chest.

I wrap my arms around her from behind and breathe her in. Cherry blossoms and vanilla. Nothing in the world will ever smell as sweet as cherry blossoms and fucking vanilla.

“It’s gorgeous,” she says as she tilts her head to the side, baring the slender curve of her neck.

I run my nose along the delicate column of her throat, then kiss that tender spot just below her ear. Then, I slide my hand under the sheet and across her stomach. “Are you okay?”

Makenna swears sex won’t hurt her, won’t hurt our child, but that doesn’t stop my overwhelming need to protect them both.

She smiles and pulls her bottom lip between her teeth. Fuck, I want to take that lip and bite it myself.

“I’m fine.We’refine,” she says then giggles. “But…”

My body tenses and she turns to look me in the eye. “After two orgasms, I could really use something to eat.”

I let out a breath and relax. “Three.”

Her eyebrows bunch together. “Three?”

“Three.”

Less than an hour later, we’re walking the streets of Palermo. God, it’s nice to be away—away from late nights keeping me out of our bed, away from sitting in the chair behind my father’s desk and the obligations that come with it, away from the memories of Jaxon’s betrayal.

It’s not dark out yet, but the air is quiet. As a kid, I’d get lost in the puzzle of alleys and buildings until I learned to recognize the buildings. Hundreds of buildings line the streets that make up the city, and each one has its own personality.

“My mother used to say Italy could make even the most cynical person believe in romance.”

So much about this place reminds me of her.So much about Makenna reminds me of her.

She squeezes my hand as we turn another corner in the maze of tall buildings and narrow roads. “It’s like a fairytale.”

I pull her against my chest and cradle her face in my hand. “That would make you my queen.”

Her face lights up in a smile that makes me want to give up everything I own just to see it every day. “I love you. So fucking much,” I tell her then I bring my mouth to hers because I can’t go another second without tasting her.

“And I love you,” she says once I let her breathe. She smiles against my mouth. “My king.”

Fuck. Something about those words coming from her lips evokes my carnal need to devour her. She’s lucky there’s a woman leaning over and hanging laundry out to dry from the windowsill above us. That woman is the only thing stopping me from pushing Makenna against the wall, shoving my hand up her delicate little sundress, and finger fucking her sweet pussy until she weeps.
