His blood burned to say a heck of a lot more than that.

“Do you two need a minute?” Logan asked.

Brian nodded. “Yes.”

Charlie shook her head. “No. Why did you want to speak with me?”

“I was hoping you could help us find Haley Olsen.”

“Ask her husband,” Charlie said. “I can’t help you. Maybe you should try dragging the lake behind the house that blew up.”

“We did.”

News to Brian.

Charlie blinked at Logan, then she shifted her gaze to Brian.

He shook his head. “I didn’t know.”

“No one at LPD does. That’s the point. We’ve been investigating under Detective Olsen’s radar.” He looked at Brian. “Not a word of this to anyone else in the department, okay?”

“Yeah. Sure.”

“If you think Haley is alive,” Charlie said, “why are you trying to find her?”

The dots were finally connecting for Brian. “You approached her, didn’t you? Asked her to work with you on nailing Seth.”

“You wanted her to testify against him?” Alarm rang in Charlie’s voice.

“Not with spousal privilege,” Brian said. “She wouldn’t have been able to testify against her husband.”

Charlie shook her head. “Then I don’t understand how you expected her to help nail him.”

“Haley was aware of her husband’s activities. We needed her to wear a wire. To get him talking about the operation.”

Not hiding the outrage from her face, Charlie glowered at the agent. “And jeopardize her life in the process.”

Logan frowned. “The harsh reality is that her life was already at risk.”

“She would’ve understood the danger,” Charlie said. “There’s no way she would’ve simply agreed.”

“She didn’t. We had to apply some pressure.”

“Maybe too much pressure,” Brian said. “Maybe you scared her off. When did you first approach her?”

“Back in May.”

Sighing, Charlie slumped in the seat like she was deflating. “That’s when she first came to USD. You, your task force, is the reason she came to me to disappear.”

Logan nodded. “Unfortunately, you’re probably right.”

“I believe Seth got wind of it somehow and killed her for it,” Charlie said. “You should be investigating him for murder.”

“We are.” Logan glanced between them. “But not Haley’s.”

“Then whose?” Charlie asked in disbelief.

“Teddy Williams?” Brian ventured a guess, and Logan nodded again.
