“Orson, don’t hang up. Charlie is in danger. She needs your help. It’s life or death.”

Silence.

It was better than a dial tone.

Brian pulled out his cell and fired off a text message to Kent.

“What do you need from me?” Orson finally asked.

“For you to do what you do best. Hack her cell phone. Her laptop. Something.”

“What you’re asking is illegal. Are you a cop?”

Brian cursed as something in his chest wilted. “This isn’t entrapment.”

“I take that as ayesand it would make this a classic example of entrapment.”

Damn it.“You’re right. Entrapment is illegal. Therefore, you’ve got a solid defense for any potential criminal charges. But if you don’t help me, Charlie is going to die. And I’m willing to risk prison to keep that from happening.”

More silence. But Orson didn’t hang up.

“Please,” Brian said. “I’m begging you.”

“What are you looking for on her phone and laptop?” Orson asked.

“Someone’s kidnapped her. He’s going to hurt her. Then kill her. I need to find her before that happens. But the only thing on her person that I can think of to locate her is her smartwatch. The app linked to it will be on her phone and laptop. I need you to access the app. It’ll show her GPS location. Can you?”

“Yeah, I think so.”

Thinkwasn’t good enough. “This needs to happen. Now,” Brian snapped. “The sooner the better. Understand?”

“The thing is, you need to find her ASAP and that’ll take too long.”

If Seth had Charlie, this might be their only chance of getting her back. It might already be too late, but Brian wasn’t going to give up. He wanted to yell, to punch the wall, to find Seth and put an end to this, but he took a deep breath. Strained for self-control. “I need you to find her. There has to be some way. Charlie said you’re a prodigy. Some kind of genius.” Even after their breakup, Charlie still worked with him, believed in his skills.

“There is a way,” Orson said. “Faster, too. We don’t need to go through her cell or the laptop. What kind of smartwatch is she wearing?”

Brian told him the brand.

Rapid-fire clicking on a keyboard sounded over the phone. “She hasn’t changed,” Orson said. “I’m pulling up the website now. She uses the same email as her log-in for stuff like this. All I have to do is crack her password for this site. And bingo. Pull up her location.”

“Then do it. Hurry.Please.”

“I have to ask, who is Charlie to you?”

Everything. His heart squeezed at the realization. “She’s my future.”

“Well, that explains the stern talk she had with me. Put me in my place. It was overdue. Are you going to make an honest woman out of her?”

He caught the double entendre. One day, he’d love to make Charlie his wife and have her operate aboveboard. No more gray boxes. “Yes.”

But first they had to reach her in time.

Chapter Fourteen

Charlie’s head throbbed. She swallowed. Her tongue felt heavy, her throat dry as cotton as she came to in confusion. In darkness.

What was happening?
