Under the files folder, I found a series of assignments for the next four weeks. What the hell was I supposed to do with this? Actually go through with it? What if I didn’t?

I went to the Messages app on the phone and, sure enough, I had one message from Professor Gallo that said: read me. I clicked on it and read.

Professor Gallo: if you don’t complete the assignments, you will fail my class.

I typed a quick reply as soon as it popped into my head.

Me: that’s so unfair.

I hit send then cursed under my breath. I needed to come up with better comebacks for him. I sounded like the rich, spoiled brat he thought I was.

Professor Gallo: Assignment #2 is due tonight.

Me: bite me

Professor Gallo: Don’t skip ahead, Ms. Salvatore.

What?

Me: Did you plan this?

How else would he have a phone and vibrator waiting for me by the time I got home. And how the hell did he know I was living with Enzo now? The jerk failed me on purpose, just so he could punish me. Fine. I opened the document labeled Assignment #2. I had to play out the story in the assigned reading.

Once upon a time, there was a rich girl. She was undeniably beautiful. But like all gorgeous creatures, she was incredibly spoiled and rotten to the core. One night, she decided to go out for a walk in the dead of night…

CHAPTER4

You Stood Me Up

Donata

I glared at my new phone sitting innocently by my orange juice. The notification banner stared back at me, daring me to open it again. I didn’t want to. Last night, I finished reading the story Luca had assigned. The things he wanted me to do were humiliating. In high school, I had gotten very good at playing the seductress. But in reality, I didn’t know much about sex, or rather, what it was like to have a sexual partner.

Luca scared me. Mainly because I knew he wasn’t here for me. He wanted revenge for all the lies I’d told about him, for getting him fired. Sure, later on, I’d recanted. But, by then, the damage had been done. And also, Aunt Vittoria didn’t want my reputation tarnished. Not because she actually cared what people thought. But because she had a very specific husband in mind for me. She wanted someone powerful and influential. Someone worthy of marrying Don Salvatore.

I shivered. Being a Don was the last thing I wanted. Another reason why school was so important to me. Despite what people saw when they ogled my blonde hair and perky tits, I wasn’t an airhead. I could see them all coming a mile away, which was why I never handed in my v-card. None of those guys were worth my time.

Aunt Vittoria had a shrewd view of the world but that didn’t make her wrong in her beliefs. Was I headed in that direction? Seeing men and everyone around me as pawns? Probably. Maybe that was why she wasn’t furious with me when she found out I had lied about Luca seducing me when I was fifteen. She knew I had done it to manipulate him into a relationship he didn’t want. The pride in her eyes was hard to miss. She saw the potential in me. That was my first clue that what I had done to Luca was terribly wrong.

My phone buzzed again, and a new banner slid down on the screen. As angry as I was at Luca for thinking I would play his plaything, I was also turned on. Seeing his name on the screen was a huge turn-on. For the first time, a guy didn’t want me for my family name; he wanted me for me.

Okay, wantwas a bit of a stretch. Luca wanted revenge. And he was using my desire for him to get it. Talk about a punishment to fit the crime.

How far was he willing to take this? Last night, I had been too shocked to read ahead in his lesson plan. That was definitely on my to-do list for today. A smile pulled at my lips. He’d asked me not to skip ahead. Luca had to know by now I wasn’t the obedient type.

“You look like the cat who drank the milk.” Enzo sat across from me and poured coffee into his mug. “Spill.”

“What? Nothing.” I flipped the phone so he couldn’t see the screen.

“Donata.” He stopped with his cup halfway to his lips. “Are you in some sort of trouble?”

“No. Why would you ask that?”

“Why?” He took a long sip before he continued, “Last night. Jesus. I’m just going to say it. Last night, you looked like someone had assaulted you. You were practically naked, running across campus.”

“Omigod, calm down, Batman. I was not assaulted.” My gaze shifted toward my vibrating phone. “I told you. I got spooked and left my stuff in the auditorium.”

“Why did you get spooked?” He cocked his brow.
