“When you flunked me, you didn’t do it over some petty revenge scheme. You had a whole plan laid out for me. You pulled at my strings, knowing I would never be able to resist you.” She shook her head. “And I fell for it.”

“I was wrong.” I rubbed the side of my face. “I know you won’t believe me. All evidence points to the contrary, but I need you to know that I never meant to hurt you.”

“You never meant to hurt me?” She shot to her feet. “You never meant to hurt me? Look at me. I’m in this mess because of you.” She flashed me her wrist and the stamp on it.

Technically, she was in this mess because she was impulsive and a bit naive. She followed me to the club because she thought I was there to have sex with other women. I didn’t ask her to follow me there. Up until that night, Ava’s murder case and my orders to get Donata to fall for me were two completely different and separate things.

Now things were much more complicated. Just like she had said before, she was knee-deep in this mess.

“Don’t you dare put this on me.” She pointed a finger at me.

“I didn’t say anything.”

“I can see it in your face. You’re mad at me for going to that place and getting marked like this. But if you hadn’t brought me back into your sphere, I never would’ve followed you there. I would’ve stayed away. I managed to do it for two whole years. I was clean.” She stopped to inhale. Her chest rose and fell as she glared at me.

“Clean?”

“Yes, Luca. Clean. That’s what you are to me. You’re like a drug.” She scoffed. “You knew that. And you took advantage of that fact. You lied to me and used me.”

“Donata.” I stood and reached for her.

“No. Don’t touch me.” She stepped away from me. “Don’t you ever touch me again.”

“What?”

“You heard me.”

Inch by inch, Donata had managed to cut me open and fill every part of me. Her words were like a punch to the gut. I’d gotten so used to the scent of her hair and the softness of her skin. I couldn’t imagine...I didn’t want to imagine a life without touching her—a life where she wasn’t here with me, where she wasn’t mine.

“You misunderstood, Ms. Salvatore.” I prowled toward her. “I didn’t tell you the truth because I was ready to set you free. I wanted you to know what we’re up against.”

“There’s no we. I’m never going to marry you. I’m never going to agree to be your uncle’s little pawn.” She turned on her heel and bolted toward the door.

Last night, I had no idea that her reaction to Ava’s murder board would be to run off into the street. But I was ready for her this time. Donata had yet to understand that she didn’t have a choice in the matter. She was the pawn, whether she wanted to be or not. And not just for Uncle Jimmy but for her aunt as well.

She reached the door a few seconds before I did. In that time, she fumbled with the lock and even managed to swing the door open, but I slammed it shut again and pressed her up against the wall, caging her in with my body.

“Our marriage will happen.” I panted a breath into her soft cheek. She felt so good in my arms. And my cock hadn’t forgotten that she wore nothing underneath my T-shirt. “It’s the only way to keep you safe. Signoria Vittoria wants to marry you off to Don Valentino.”

“She would never do that to me. Stop pretending to be this knight in shining armor. You don’t care about me. You’re not here to save me. You never were. You’re just as despicable as Don Gallo.” She pursed her lips.

The hate in her eyes cut me in a way I never thought possible. I pressed my forehead to hers as I tried to find the words to explain to her why I had to do this, why I couldn’t let her marry that old man. King or not, he wasn’t what she wanted. She wanted me. Even if all she felt for me right now was hatred, she wanted me.

“Despicable or not, you can’t just wish your feelings away. You want me.”

“I don’t.” She shoved her hand between us. “I hate you. I’d rather marry Don Valentino. He might be twice my age, but at least he’s never lied to me.”

“Over. My. Dead. Body. You’re mine. Do you understand?” My heart pumped so hard, I couldn’t feel anything other than this pull dragging me toward her, anchoring me to this very spot, where I could feel her hot breath on my face. “No one touches what’s mine.”

I clenched my jaw. Donata was an expert at making me lose my mind. Right now, all I wanted to do was beat Don Valentino, the sitting king, to a pulp, for even suggesting that he and Donata should marry. The idea made me see red, and it made me want to possess every part of her.

I unbuckled my belt. A few minutes ago, Donata was begging me to take her. Even now, as angry as she was, I could see the lust in her eyes. I unbuttoned my trousers and freed my erection. I was so ready for her. The pink in her cheeks told me she was ready for me too.

“Tell me to stop.” I lifted the hem of her T-shirt and ran my hand up the seam of her folds. “Tell me you don’t want me anymore. Tell me that the fire that blazes through your veins every time we’re together is gone.” I pumped my cock and slammed into her wet pussy.

“Luca.” She dug her nails down my back.

“Ask me to fuck you.” I thrust into her and wrapped her legs around my waist. “Like your first time,” I whispered in her ear. “I need to hear you say it.”
