“Let him go.”

“He tried to kill Luca.” Santino cocked an eyebrow.

“And now he knows what will happen if he ever tries anything with us again.”

“Alright.” He un-cocked the gun and stuffed it in the back of his pants before he stepped aside.

“Get the hell out of my sight.” Donata towered over Nathan.

As soon as Nathan was gone, I turned to the manager. His red cheeks and the sweat circles around his suit jacket told me he was ready to do whatever we wanted. The man wasn’t trained to deal with hostile guests. He didn’t even put up a fight when we asked him to open the vault. Mostly, he was concerned with his and the club’s reputation. After we promised that we were only interested in one thing, he gave us access to, not only to his office, but also to the small safe where the camera memory card was stored.

“You have what you want. Please leave.” The manager wiped his forehead.

“I’m not leaving here until I see what’s on it.” I pointed to his laptop on the large desk. “Unlock it.”

“It’s smart to keep tabs on members. It’s nothing serious. Mostly cheating husbands.” He sat down and entered his password. When he stood to make room for me, he added, “you can keep it. We don’t want any trouble.”

“Right.” I glared at him then clicked on the memory card icon.

The memory card had several MP4 files and photos. I quickly went down the list until one file name caught my attention—Gallo. I moved the mouse to it and hit play.

My chest tightened when Ava’s face appeared on the screen.

CHAPTER28

They Couldn't Let Us Have This

Donata

My pulse spiked when I finally got to see Ava Conti. Yeah, she seemed like the kind of woman who would make a perfect wife. She was pretty, with an angelic face and a sweet disposition. I couldn’t blame Luca for wanting a normal life with her. That was the one thing I could never offer him. Being with me meant sinking deeper into the bowels of our mafia world.

I covered my mouth. Luca would’ve been happy with her.

“Hurry up. It shouldn’t take you this long to set up a suite. It’s not rocket science.” Nathan appeared in the video, glaring at Ava as she placed a tray with glasses and a bucket of ice on the coffee table. “You can’t let them see you here. We’re supposed to be invisible to the members.”

“Wait. What?” I paused the video and pointed at his face on the screen. “He used to be part of the staff?”

“Yes.” The manager pursed his lips. “He’s now sponsored by one of our members.”

“Do you know who?” Luca asked.

“I don’t deal with membership. I only manage the staff.” He shifted his weight from one foot to the other. “But I can find out.” He gestured toward the door. “I can go check with our director of membership.”

“Do that.” Luca nodded toward the door, then pressed play again.

“I’m almost done. I’ll be out of here in a minute.” Ava gave Nathan a tentative smile.

“Good. I’ll go tell them the room is ready.” He gave her a once-over then left.

As soon as the door clicked shut, she relaxed her stance. Now that Nathan was gone, she moved a little faster as she wiped down the table and arranged the bottle service, so it was neat and organized. When she went to move the flower arrangement on the sofa table, the image on the video went sideways.

“What?” She picked up the camera that had been hidden in the vase. “Shit.” She clumsily put it back.

Out of frame, something startled her and made her step back. She quickly looked around the room then ran and hid under bed.

“What the hell is going on?” I asked. “Why didn’t she just leave the room?”

“That’s why?” Luca pointed at the screen. “Uncle Jimmy and his best buddy, Mr. Vitali.”
