“It’s all right, princess. It’s all right.” He made his way to her, pushing his own anger aside to see to her needs. “Just breathe.”

“I can’t breathe! I can’t…” She turned her face into the cypress bark and sobbed.

Silvan gathered her into his arms. She was as pliant and limp as a doll, and if he hadn’t swept her from her feet, she’d have crumpled onto the knobby roots. “Youcan.” He brushed a kiss along her temple and firmed up his hold. He hadn’t tried his mother’s trick in years. Would it even work? “Can you see it?”

“See what? I can’t see anything! Silvan, I can’t even—”

“Close your eyes and look at the sky, princess.”

“That doesn’t even make sense!”

“Hear my voice, love. Close your eyes and follow it.” He planted a hard kiss on her mouth to kill her rebuttal. “Do as I say, Andromeda.”

She sucked in her bottom lip and nodded, sobbing against his chest.

Silvan inhaled hard and let his mind travel to where he needed Romy to follow. It wasn’t an actual place yet the realest destination he’d ever traveled to. His mother had taken him there so many times that when she died, he missed it almost as much as he missed her; like leaving a home you could never return to.

“Do you see it?”

Romy shuddered in a breath and nodded. “Stars.”

“And sky.”

“And clouds.”

“What else?”

“Peace.”

“Peace,” Silvan repeated and kissed her again.

“How… where… I could live here. How do you ever leave?” She stirred against his chest, but her pulse had slowed to normal. Her breathing steadied. “Silvan…”

Holding her limp, trusting body in his arms, Silvan at last understood what his pack mates described as heartbreak. It was unthinkable to feel so unbelievably close to someone and know they could never be yours. Untenable. Even if he gathered her tight and ran and ran until his human legs gave out, there would never be a place where they could be anything but enemies.

“I’ve never shown anyone else. You won’t tell anyone?”

“I’ll keep your secret as long as I live if you promise to take me here again.”

“Of course, love. Whenever you want.” His chest cracked down the middle and split. What they’d seen on the island… as soon as he told his father, the rest of the story would come to light. Everyone would know Silvan had forsaken his pack for a highborn witch he was forbidden from speaking to outside the council meetings.

The strange night on Mar Island with the redheaded princess who had stolen a part of him would be reduced to a dream and nothing more.

Romy’s eyes fluttered open. She locked them onto his, searching for something. Her mouth parted. Chin tilted.

Silvan met her demand with a crushing kiss. She moaned and arched for more, wriggling in his hold to extract her arms and wind them around his neck.

“I want you,” she panted into his mouth. The words vibrated from her tongue to his. “I need you.”

Silvan’s cock strained in his pants. Had he ever wantedanyoneso badly? It would be so easy to lay her down on the bayou floor, spread her legs, and claim her, giving them both an explosive memory to hold on to when the rest faded. He’d have her walking diagonally for a week, a persistent, aching reminder of how crazed with desire he’d been when he’d fucked her into next year.

So why did he stop?

Why did he gently let her down, set her on her feet, and take a step back?

Why, why, why?

His cock had questions.
