“Don’t bullshit me. I get enough bullshit from everyone else in my life.”

Jesse sighed. “You were gonna get hurt…or worse.”

“That was thepoint—to find out just how dangerous he is.”

“It’s not fair.”

“‘Fair’?”

Jesse ground his teeth. “He’s set up that system to keep people safe, Trix. Doesn’t he get points for that?”

“So you’re his biggest fan now, huh?”

“Look… As far as I’m concerned, we got out of this by the skin of our teeth. Let’s just draw a line under it, huh?”

“And that’s another thing,” she went on, her voice raising. “We should have been charged for breaking in at the very least.”

Jesse squeezed ketchup on the roll with a frown. “You sound like you wanted to be charged.”

“Then I could have at least done a post about the suppression of freedom of speech. But no, I got chucked out on my arse in the middle of the night, no explanation. There’s some top-level conspiracy going on here.”

“More likely Magnusson dropped the charges.”

“Why?”

“I don’t know, do I?”

“Jess, I can tell when you’re lying.”

“Look… I just rang to check you were okay. You clearly are, so—”

“Don’t hang up! I’ve got something else you can do for me.”

“You serious?”

“This time it won’t go wrong, I swear. You just hack into his security cameras, download the footage—”

“Jesus, Trix, will you let this go? You’re gonna get yourself in real trouble.”

“Not if you get it right this time.”

Jesse swallowed his mouthful. “Leave it, will you?”

“Two grand.”

“The answer is no.”

“Come on, Jess. I know you need the money.”

“Bye, Trixy.”

He hung up, shaking his head. He finished the coffee, wiped his mouth on the back of his hand, took a breath and rang his brother.

“Hey.”

“Hey,” Jesse replied, pushing crumbs around his plate with a finger. Anton didn’t say anything. Jesse fought a sigh. “You rang?”

“Yeah, I…” Anton paused. Jesse waited, fighting impatience. “Tell me straight, Jess. Tell me you’re not sliding again.”
