Jesse frowned at it. “This is a law firm…and a case number.”

“I’m impressed.”

“I’ve had a few case numbers of my own over the years,” he muttered. “What does this one mean?”

Magnusson paused then spoke without breaking eye contact. “This firm is representing the other side in an ongoing legal dispute I am having. The case number is mine. I have every faith in my legal team, but an idea of the sort of case the opposition is mounting would go a long way to helping them plan their own.”

It took Jesse a long time to find his voice. “You want me to hack a law firm?”

“Yes, I do.” Magnusson said, interlacing his fingers. “Though there’s a catch, as you’ve probably guessed.”

“Besides it being horrifically illegal?”

Magnusson lifted an eyebrow slightly. “I did not have the impression that that would be a problem for you, Mr. Truelove.”

Jesse clenched his jaw.

“You would be suitably compensated.”

“Money’s not much good if you’re rotting in prison.”

“I assure you it will not come to that.”

“How do you know?”

“Because I know how skilled you are,” he said smoothly, “and I will give you the added assurance that you will have my legal team on your side should any consequences arise. And they are very, very good at their jobs.”

“The redheaded guy, right?”

Magnusson nodded. “Darragh Kelly heads up the team. Though he’s been practicing the law for at least a hundred years longer than any of my human representatives. Do what you do best, do it well and, trust me, I can shield you from all potential recrimination.”

Jesse stared hard at the paper. “Even if I said yes, their files will be on a closed system. No access from outside.” Jesse lifted his head. “You want me to break in, don’t you?”

“I want you to do what you do best.”

“Is this why you really hired me?” Jesse said, unaccountably hurt.

To his surprise, Magnusson smiled. The hint of a sharp canine glinted against the redness of his mouth.

“I believe in utilizing all my staff’s full potential,” he said.

“What sort of case is it?” Jesse demanded. “If you’re wanting me to help you get off from assault or murder or any shit like that…”

“Jesse, I’m hurt. It is nothing of the kind. Besides, don’t you think you and the whole world would know if I was facing those kinds of charges?”

“Not if you are good enough at hiding them.”

Magnusson’s face was serious. He shifted down the sofa until his thigh was almost touching Jesse’s. Jesse resisted backing away as Magnusson gazed into his eyes. “I haven’t hurt anyone, Jesse. Quite the opposite.”

“What do you mean?”

“You’ll find out, in time,” he said and glanced at the paper in Jesse’s hand. “So, what do you say?”

“Surely one of your guys is far better at sneaking into locked offices with no one hearing or seeing anything?”

“This is a human problem with human consequences. My kind aren’t interested.”

“What about your undead lawyer friend?”
