“Yes?” Emory’s face was pale again. Every hair was in place. There was no visual indication that anything had happened. But Jesse could still taste him…feel him.

He stared at the floor. “If you wanna do it again… I dunno. I might be up for that.”

“I would like that,” Emory said after a pause so long that Jesse’s throat closed over.

“So…you like me?”

Emory blinked. “Of course I do.”

“Out of all your fit haemophile friends and all your adoring human staff, you likeme?”

“Yes,” Emory said, “I do.”

“Okay then,” Jesse said, slow pleasure seeping through him like treacle. “Great.”

“Before this goes any further,” Emory said, his face suddenly unreadable, “I feel I need to say this.” He paused. His gaze was intense. “You need to know…I’m never going to hurt you, Jesse, not in the way you think you want.”

A red prickle of anger stole through the pleasant glow in Jesse’s chest. “And what do IthinkI want, huh?”

Emory raised an eyebrow. “Pain.”

Jesse frowned. “Isn’t that up to me?”

Emory pressed a kiss to his forehead. Jesse’s annoyance drained away as quickly as it had come.

“I’ll find ways to please you,” he whispered against his skin, “for as long as you want me to. But you can’t ask me to hurt you. I won’t do that.”

Cold chased heat through Jesse’s limbs. “What if that’s what I want?”

“I’ll show you other ways,” Emory said. “Other ways I can give you what you need.”

“You really think you can?” Jesse asked, very quietly.

“I’d like to try.”

Jesse lifted his head to meet Emory’s eyes. They were serious but sincere. He was so beautiful that Jesse didn’t know what to think.

“Guess it’s worth a try.”

Emory smiled. “And try I will.”

Jesse nodded and turned for the door but paused. Realization chilled his skin. “The thing you want me to steal from the mayor’s house…”

Emory looked at him, then nodded. “Dimity.”

Jesse went very still. It took him a long moment to marshal his words. “That’s not stealing, Emory. That’s kidnapping.”

“Until anyone proves otherwise, I am her legal guardian,” he said. “She has been removed from my custody without permission. I am merely redressing the balance.”

“I’mnotkidnapping any kid for you, Emory, no matter how good a shag you are.”

“I understand this is a lot—”

“Understatement of the millennia.”

Emory regarded him a long, silent moment. “Why don’t you ask her?”

“What?”
