“I’m not trying to manipulate you.”

“Well, you’re managing it pretty well without trying.”

Jesse jumped when Emory pulled his hands away from his face. He threaded his fingers through Jesse’s hair. He lifted one hand and brushed it back from Jesse’s face.

“Forget it all for now…all of it. I’m sorry I’ve troubled you.”

“Troubled…right,” Jesse said, his voice catching as he resisted reaching out and crushing the large, powerful body to his own.

“I forget how much you feel things, how fast and strong your emotions are.”

“Well, I got news for you, pal. I feel them faster and stronger than most, so unless you really wanna call this whole thing off—which I know you won’t ’cause you love the damn kid—I suggest you leave so I can get on with—”

Emory cut him off with a kiss. Jesse shivered, closed his eyes and stepped into Emory’s embrace. He mouthed Emory’s lips hungrily, and he opened them, allowing Jesse to delve his tongue in. He met Jesse’s tongue with his own, and the sharp canines made Jesse shiver. Emory straightened. He was smiling.

“Swimming helps you relax, yes?”

“I…uh…”

“Come,” he said, stepping back into the hall.

“I haven’t got my shorts.”

Emory’s teeth glinted in the starlight. “Neither have I.”

Jesse’s chest tightened. He shut his door and hurried to keep up with Emory’s long, loping strides as he led the way downstairs.

“What if someone sees us?” Jesse whispered, glancing up at the cameras in the hall.

“I’m not keeping our relationship a secret,” he said as he entered the library. He glanced over his shoulder. “Unless you’d rather it was?”

“Since when did it become a relationship?”

Emory paused and turned to face him. “Isn’t it?”

“Shit, what? I dunno… I thought we were just…Christ. Way to put a guy on the spot.”

Emory’s face was still. He was quiet for a while then smiled. “You don’t enjoy this part, do you?”

“What part?”

Emory brought up Jesse’s hand and brushed his fingers against his lips. “Intimacy.”

Jesse fought to keep his voice steady. “Nowadays we just call it ‘fucking’, mate.”

“But we haven’t even done that yet,” Emory murmured against his fingers, his eyes lighting with a dark fire.

Jesse shivered. “You were right. Tom can’t know. Like you said…I don’t think he’d like it.”

“Indeed,” Emory said, dropping his hand. “Tom is a good man and a valued member of my household. But he’s had some…unfortunate experiences with my kind in the past. They would probably color his views on the subject.” Emory swept through the study and into the pitch-black pool room with Jesse hurrying behind. “I’m sure it’s within your skills to ensure he doesn’t find out.”

Emory turned on the underwater lights, bathing the room in the flickering turquoise. He held out his hand.

Something inside Jesse snapped, and all thoughts of Tom, Dimity and the mayor’s house fled. He shoved Emory’s hand aside and claimed his mouth with a demanding groan as he began wrestling with shirt buttons.

“Such impatience, liebling,” Emory said as he undid the button on Jesse’s jeans. “Did I not explain we go slow?”

“You’ve seen me naked,” Jesse said between kisses, tugging Emory’s shirt open and pushing it off his shoulders. “It’s only fair.”
