She looked at him disbelievingly. “To hang out with, okay. Sure. Because Uncle Gabriel is going to run for office. But she’s introuble.”

“Sheistrouble,” he countered. “And you keep going back to her.”

Bianca shook her head and looked out the window.

Cassiel sighed in frustration. “She got robbed. That happens to people who don’t come back to their apartment for days on end. Why did you go there? She’s not your concern. Let her family deal with it.”

Bianca wouldn’t look back at him.

He made another sound of frustration. “Am I going to have to find out where she is?”

Bianca laughed and looked back at him. “Yes.”

He rolled his eyes dramatically, repressing a smile. “Fine. I’ll keep digging. But if I find her, you can’t hang out with her anymore.”

“Fine,” Bianca agreed. It made her sad to think that this time she really was going to have to give up her friend, but she was relieved that her brother had agreed to help her.

“No more poking around and getting yourself arrested, okay?” he said.

She made a little X over her heart. “Pinkie swear. Now will you stop having me followed?”

He blew through his lips, making apppbbttsound. “Maybe when you’re eighty.”

She looked away from him again.

“I’ll stop hiring babysitters for you when you can go a full month without ending up in a police station,” he said. “We can’t have this right now.”

“I know,” she said, still looking out the window.

Cassiel was silent for a moment. “And he’s a year younger than me,” he said, and she instantly knew he was talking about Elias. “Don’t you think that’s a little old for you?”

She looked at him, her brow scrambled. “I’m twenty-three. He’s twenty-nine. It’s not that big of an age difference.”

Cassiel looked away. He was quiet for a while, and then said, “You’ll never be older than sixteen.” They both chuckled at how ridiculous he was acting.

After getting home she took a long shower and returned a cavalcade of family phone calls. Then Bianca curled up on her couch, exhausted, waiting for Elias.

She awoke in the middle of the night to her phone buzzing in her hand. It was a text from Elias saying he was outside. He looked pale and tired when she opened the door.

She let him in and faced him with her arms crossed protectively across her chest, expecting him to launch into all the reasons why he had to end things. Instead, he stepped forward with a relieved look on his face and held her, kicking the door closed with his foot.

He rested his head on top of hers, breathing in the scent of her hair, swaying with her slightly. After a few moments, he leaned back to look at her. His eyes tracked over her face first, then he slid his fingers down her arms until they came to her wrists. He looked at the fading marks, his mouth tight, and then he pulled her back into his arms and kissed her.

He opened her mouth softly, warming her to him in slow and steady stages until she was falling into him, setting aside everything that wasn’t in this moment. As soon as she had given in, he pulled back. Leading her by the hand, he brought her upstairs.

This time there wasn’t the mad rush to get out of their clothes in order to relieve an ache. This time when Elias undressed them it was to make the ache build. He took their clothes off a layer at a time, watching her reactions and touching each section of new skin with his fingertips and his mouth.

He lifted up the edge of the covers for her and slid in next to her, just holding her for a dozen breaths, even though she could feel that he was hard. She wrapped her hand around him, watching his breathing speed up and his head tip back as she moved up and down his shaft. She licked the wet tip and slid him in and out of her mouth until he was trembling.

“Wait,” he breathed, catching her head between his hands, and bringing her back up level with him.

He lifted her wrists up and kissed the red marks that were still there and then rolled her under him, shutting his eyes as he buried himself inside her.

His thrusts were slow and gentle and he held her tightly, his face tucked against her neck. She gasped his name, pleading with him to move faster, but he made her wait. When he finally allowed them to come, they were both desperate and shaking.

After their breathing smoothed out and their bodies cooled down Bianca looked across the pillow at him.

“I thought you were going to break up with me,” she said.
