Diana put on a very different attitude for them than she had for Bianca. It was a business-like, humorless mask, and Bianca was sad to see the sassy woman hidden away, but she supposed it was best. As far as she knew, the only person both of her brothers ever took sass from was her.

“You can take your sister home now. But be prepared to come in for further questions should they arise,” Diana said, before turning away from them and bringing the rifle she was carrying to a forensics team who were already surrounding the dead body.

“Come on Bumble Bee,” Rafe said, putting an arm around her.

They walked her down the row of cars to a waiting SUV. She stopped before getting in.

“What’s the matter?” Rafe asked.

“From now on, I pick my drivers. And I want to know them personally, okay?” she said.

“I think that would be a good idea,” Cassiel agreed.

“And I want to take self-defense classes.”

Rafael smiled. “I think I know someone who can teach you.”

They all got into the back of the SUV together and Bianca fell asleep, wedged in between her brothers.

Epilogue

Bianca still didn’t have a phone, but that would have to wait.

She had agreed to see the Loring’s personal physician even though it was three in the morning, and then she had gone back to her brother’s apartment for a shower and a change of clothes. By the time she was done with all that, it was still only six in the morning, but she couldn’t wait another second.

Bianca called for a car, even though Abbe, Rafe, Cassiel, and Gabriel didn’t want to let her out of their sight. “I’ll be fine,” she assured them, running out the door. “But I have to do this.”

She didn’t get nervous until she was at the call box, ringing Elias’ apartment. What if he didn’t want to see her? What if he was angry with her for messing up his life? Her heart was in her throat when she heard his voice over the staticky intercom.

“Who is it?” he asked, sounding sleepy.

“It’s me. Bianca. I—”

She didn’t get to finish the sentence because the door buzzed. She pushed through it and went up the stairs, trying to remember how many flights she had to walk up. Every part of her was shaking.

She saw him standing in his doorway in just a pair of sweatpants, his hair sticking up, and a look of complete disbelief on his face.

She stood in front of him, twisting her hands, with no words.

“Are you okay?” he asked, his voice gravely.

“Yeah. I’ll be fine,” she said. She could see from the way his bare chest was swelling that his breathing was elevated. She swallowed. “I just wanted to say thank you,” she said lamely.

He looked disappointed. “You’re welcome,” he replied.

She glanced behind him and saw boxes. She lifted a hand, pointing at them. “What are you doing?”

He gave her a sad smile. “Moving,” he said.

“Where?”

“London. With my parents.”

She stepped forward automatically. “No,” she said, shaking her head. “Why are you leaving?”

He gave her a hopeful smile. “Why? Do you want me to stay?”

She wavered back and forth on her feet, feeling her eyes start to sting. “Of course, I want you to stay. I’m in love with you.”
