“It’s that simple?”

“It is.”

She could barely see him through the slits of her eyes. “How do I know I can trust you?”

“Have I ever lied to you?”

She didn’t know. So, she lifted her shoulder in response.

“The answer to that is no, Nisha. Are there any other demands?”

“Demands?”

“Yes, demands. We’ve come too far in this mission to risk everything now. If me agreeing to this will wipe the sour look from your face and fix your attitude, then I’ll do it. I’m sure Solgre would agree.”

Nisha could hardly breathe despite the deep breaths she took. He wasn’t going to delete anything about her because it was the right thing to do or because he cared for her and didn’t want his colleagues to know about her intimate details. He would do it because of his stupid mission.

Her skin prickled with heat. There was a low dull hum in her ears. Her vision clouded, and she didn’t trust anything that would come from her mouth. But with everything she had in her, she sat up, smiled and picked up her fork.

Ding.

The alert on her phone went off.

Glad for the distraction, she fished her phone from her back pocket and unlocked it. There were over fifty text messages and as many missed calls. She’d only turned her phone back on when they’d sat down for their meal, with the plans of getting caught up on any messages she’d missed after dinner. There was no point in waiting until they returned to the room, she needed the diversion ASAP.

“Messages from your lovers?” Kien said, not too kindly.

She lifted her head long enough to thin her lips into a smile. “That’s no concern of yours.”

He was silent as she went through her text messages. There were a couple from Tasha, asking her if she was enjoying her romantic getaway. She replied that it was going splendidly, and she couldn’t wait to tell her all about it. She put ten extra l’s in the word all, hoping Tasha would see through her sarcasm.

She had messages from a few other friends and the rest were from her mother whose messages ranged from panicked because she couldn’t get through to Nisha to fine because she’d gotten in touch with Tasha who’d told her about the hike and reassured her the area they were in didn’t have good reception. The rest of the messages from her mom were about her friend’s nephew.

Nisha studied the picture accompanied by one of her mother’s texts. He was handsome. Tall, beard, kind eyes, nice smile and nice lips. He was dressed in a blue blazer with black lapels and seemed to be in mid-laugh. He looked to be her type.

She replied back to her mom everything was fine and that she would be home soon. The last message Nisha checked was from a number she didn’t recognize. She opened it and found it was from Douglas, the man in the picture and her mother’s friend’s nephew. Her mom had given him her number without waiting for a response from her. The message was short and sweet, asking her if she was available for coffee when she returned.

She replied, “Yes.”

She sat her phone down and took a sip of her wine. All the while watching Kien with a smug look on her face. She would get over him, and this was the first step.

“The condition for me erasing the log is if you act like we’re enjoying our time together.”

She gave him her most dazzling smile and even batted her eyelashes. “Is this better, Kien?”

He leveled a look on her, showing his displeasure. “It’s a start. Now, let’s have a conversation so the rest of the humans think we’re hap—”

Ring. Ring.

Nisha startled at the sound of her phone ringing. She hadn’t heard it in days. She held up her finger and retrieved her phone. She didn’t recognize the phone number. She could’ve ignored it, but she also couldn’t pass up on making Kien more irritated than he was.

She accepted the call, fully expecting a telemarketer. “Hello?”

“Nisha?” the voice on the other end was deep and sexy.

“This is her. May I help you?”

“Hello, it’s Douglas. I hope you don’t think it too forward to call you. But when you replied to my message, I didn’t want to miss you again. I called you a few times, but you didn’t answer. I hope I didn’t catch you at a bad time?”
