“Uh, there’s very much a difference between my Range Rover and your hovercar. One doesn’t fly. I’ll let you guess which one,” she said, singing the last sentence.

Kien smiled while lifting a broad shoulder. “The logistics differ slightly, but the concept is the same. They’re both vehicles that get us from one point to another.”

She found it easy to chuckle. “That’s like saying your spaceship is almost like one of our rockets. Which it’s not. You can travel the galaxy in yours and we can barely get to our space station.”

He smirked and the gesture enhanced his already attractive features. Her heart thumped and she forced herself to focus on the road before they ended up in the trees.

“We saw your space station when we first arrived. Cute.”

Nisha couldn’t contain her smile. “We must look so backward to you guys. Down here squabbling amongst ourselves, not realizing there are other people out there.”

“It’s more refreshing than anything. It’s slower than what we’re used to. If the circumstances were different, we would be able to enjoy ourselves and relax before the rescue.”

Nisha sighed. “I wish you, I mean, you all, could travel. There’s so much more to Earth than Point Breeze, Minnesota.”

“I’ve looked up different landmarks on your internet. Before we leave, we plan to visit some of them. Not only is Earth beautiful, but there are also beautiful women here.”

And just like that. SLAM. It all came roaring back.

His people wanted to know if humans and Thellians were compatible for mating. They had downloaded various dating apps because a customer at Tasha’s boutique had suggested it. While Phate had stopped dating to be with Tasha, Kien had been on a dating spree ever since.

Her infatuation for the hot alien had made her do something she’d vowed to avoid and she’d downloaded a slew of dating apps in hopes of matching with Kien on one of them.

In her head it was the best way to get what she’d wanted. Which was a date with the stranger living next to her best friend. In hindsight, not her greatest idea but she’d never had to ask a man on a date before and pride made her resort to playing games instead of being forthright.

It had worked. They’d matched. And after a few flirty messages on the app, he’d asked her out.

The date had been a disaster. He’d been a jerk, openly flirting with the waitress, who had gone on a date with Kien previously. If that wasn’t enough, Kien’s eyes followed every woman in the restaurant.

She’d never had a worse first date in her life.

On paper, Kien wasn’t even her type. He was a hot guy with a great body who lived in a one-bedroom apartment with two other dudes, didn’t have a job and whose only notable past time was dating multiple women. Being easily dismissed by a player had done a number on her ego. Especially after she’d learned dating was a social experiment for them.

The smile she’d been wearing during their easy-going conversation dropped from her face.

Brrriing. Brrriing.

Nisha startled at the abrupt sound.

Incoming call from The Kidnapper, displayed across her truck’s display screen.

“This is my mother. Be quiet.”

Kien leaned forward to squint at the screen. “The Kidnapper?”

Brrriing. Brrriing.

“She adopted me.”

“I don’t understand.”

She waved him off. “Now, hush.” Happy for the interruption, Nisha hit the answer call button located on her steering wheel with her thumb. “Hey, ma.”

“Hey, baby girl.” Sayaka’s voice, although she had lived in the States since she was in her early twenties, was heavy with a Japanese accent. “I was thinking about going thrifting tomorrow. How about you take the day off so we make a day of it? We could hit a few antique shops and go to lunch?”

“Ma, how many times do I have to tell you that ‘thrifting’ and shopping antique stores aren’t the same? Thrifting involves going to stores like the Salvation Army or Goodwill to look for old clothes to repurpose into today’s fashion. What you want to do is buy old knickknacks to display in that mausoleum you call home.”

“My friend Jenni told me she found a Tiffany vase at one of those Salvation places before. I would be the talk of my women’s group if I had a find like that.”
