Kien matched her yawn and rubbed his tired eyes. “We ran out of food. It’s time to stop.”

She chucked, sleepily. “And Tasha thought the cooler full of food and snacks would last two days.”

“Two days?” Kien glanced at the cooler on the back seat. He’d eaten most of it before early evening. “How do we get more?”

She yawned again. “Luckily for you, this is America. We can get all the junk food we desire, anytime we want. We can stop at the gas station in the morning and replenish our supplies.”

“They sell candies where they sell gas?”

Nisha chuckled. “Candies, soda, beer, chips, everything.”

“What’s beer?”

“It’s an alcohol beverage consumed by most of the American men.” She tilted her head to the side. “Probably most of the men on this planet actually.”

Yet another yawn muffled her last word.

“I don’t know how you do it. You have to keep your focus on the road and remember your traffic laws for such a long period of time. It is truly a skill.”

Nisha engaged the blinker and pulled off on the first exit. “We thought we would’ve had self-flying cars by now. I’m sure driving around is so much easier where you’re from.”

“Much easier.”

She chuckled and pulled into a parking lot of a large building with an illuminated sign. “We’ll stay here for the night.”

She parked and he retrieved their bags from the backseat while she collected the trash from their snacks. Inside, she led him to a woman standing behind a counter.

“We’d like two rooms for the night, please,” Nisha told the worker.

“We’re pretty full tonight. There’s a convention in town but I can check to see what I have.” The worker tapped on her keyboard while looking at her computer. After a few minutes, she replied, “We only have one room with a king-sized bed. There’s another hotel about twenty minutes up the road that may have some availability, though.”

Nisha rubbed her eyes. He really didn’t think she had another twenty minutes of driving left in her.

“We’ll take this,” Kien said.

The worker glanced from Kien to Nisha to make sure it was alright.

“We’re a couple, yes?” he said to Nisha, reminding her of their mission.

She gave him a nod and to the worker, she said, “We’ll take it.”

WHILE NISHA TOOK Ashower, Kien busied himself with ordering food from room service as well as extra bedding so he could sleep on the couch.

Solgre called the moment Kien settled in a comfortable chair. “How is the journey?”

“It was long and uneventful.”

“How are you doing?”

“I’m doing,” Solgre said after a heavy sigh. “Thank you for this.”

“You would do the same for me.”

“Only because your mother would skin me alive if I allowed something to happen to her only son,” Solgre chuckled.

“I think she’s the only reason why youdokeep me alive,” Kien countered. “But seriously, your health?”
