Thea breathed a huge sigh. ‘Oh, right.’ The possibility had not occurred to her. Of course, that was plausible.

He looked at her. ‘Oh, god. You thought …’

Thea felt really foolish. ‘Well, of course. What else would I think?’ She stared at him. ‘Why didn’t you tell me you had a sister? Do you stay here sometimes, then?’

He shook his head vehemently.

‘Mate, can I have that twenty?’

‘Oh, yes – sorry.’ He handed over the money. Then he looked at the taxi driver. ‘Wait.’

‘Do you need a taxi somewhere else?’

He nodded. ‘You might as well take the taxi home, Thea.’ He got out his wallet and looked at the driver. ‘I’ll give you her address.’

Chapter 7

Thea looked at Miles. Something wasn’t right. She looked at the flat. ‘Are you visiting your sister, then? I’d like to meet her. You never talk about your family.’

He shook his head. ‘No, not really. I just literally bumped into her, so we got a taxi back here together. I might pop in, but it wouldn’t be a great time for you to visit, you know, with the kids under her feet.’

Thea stared at him. ‘Why can’t I just say hi?’

He looked at her. ‘I just said why.’ He glanced up at the flats. ‘Look, why don’t we go back to your place? You said you wanted to meet up later. Well, here we are. Let’s go.’ He opened the taxi door.

‘Why don’t we go to your hotel for a change?’ she asked. She recalled her visit to the hotel first. She hadn’t told him she’d been there.

‘Pardon me?’

‘You know, the hotel where you’re staying. The hotel card is in your wallet.’

‘You went through my wallet?’

‘Well, you didn’t respond to my voicemail.’

‘I was in meetings all afternoon.’

Thea looked at him, wondering whether anything he’d said was true. There was one way to find out for sure. ‘I saw the name of the hotel in your wallet. It’s not far.’

His grin faltered. ‘It’s not a very nice room. Let’s go to a nice coffee place instead.’

Thea nearly let it slip that she’d been there already. She couldn’t imagine a hotel like that didn’t have nice rooms.

Thea persisted. ‘No, I’d like to see your hotel room.’

‘Why? It’s just a hotel room.’

She noticed he sounded irritated.

‘I’d just like to see where you live when you’re in London.’

‘Look, I’d rather not. My room is a bit of a mess with dirty laundry. I’d be embarrassed to take you back there. I’ll tell you what. I promise the next time we hook up, we’ll stay in my hotel room. How about that?’

He was standing there with the taxi door open, motioning for her to get in. She caught him glancing at the flats and looked over at them too. If it had been a house, she would have run up to the front door and knocked, insisting she speak to the woman inside.

He turned to her. ‘We could pass it in the taxi.’ He turned to the driver. ‘Will you pass by my hotel on our way?’

‘Yeah – sure.’
