“That bad?” I cringe.

“Let’s just say one day we all hope to have the kind of sex Sarah’s mom is having,” Cat says wryly as Sarah shudders.

I suddenly feel an instant kinship with Sarah. My classmates still don’t know about the summer video, thank god, and I’m not going to tell them about it. Because of that I know exactly what Sarah’s going through. On the one hand you want to be happy for your mom, but on the other, there are some things you don’t want to see. Or hear. Or, in the case of my dad, have a whole city gossiping about. I mean, eew. Just eew.

“Fortunately, their bedroom is downstairs and on the other side of the house. That makes it easier to pretend they only sleep in there.” I look around at the other girls, who are all wearing somewhat horrified expressions, as if they can’t fathom the idea of their parents having sex. I don’t like to think about it either, but why are Sarah and I getting singled out?

“Your parents don’t, you know?” I look around the group.

“If they do, we don’t know about it,” Hannah says. “Either they’ve been married long enough things have become dull or they’re better at hiding it.”

“Huh,” I say, mostly to myself, because I’ve never given much thought to how unusual it is toknowyour parents are having sex. Come to think of it, why am I giving it any thought?

“Um, can we change the subject?”I ask.

“Yes!” Sarah practically shouts. “Did you guys see The Bachelor this week?”

A chorus of groans surrounds me.

“Can you believe he didn’t get rid of Shannon?” Cat scrunches her nose.

“Why are the nice ones always the first to go? Skye would’ve been perfect for Dane,” Hollie grumbles.

“He’ll see through her act eventually,” Sarah says confidently.

Four heads swing in my direction waiting for my comment. All I can do is stare back at them.

“You do watch The Bachelor, right?” Sarah asks.

“Uh, no.” I sip my watery beer to hide my discomfort.

“What?” Cat’s eyes grow wide. “How can you not? It’s sooo good.”

“I go to high school, why would I want to watch it when I live it?” I look at each girl in turn, figuring my comments have to resonate with at least one of them.

“It’s not like high school.” Hollie rolls her eyes.

“A bunch of girls fighting over a guy isn’t like high school?” I can’t think of a worse way to spend an evening than watching a bunch of overly done up women embarrassing themselves to get the guy, and frankly, I’m surprised Hollie and her friends are into it. Although, from what I hear at lunch so are most other girls, so maybe I’m the odd one out, again.

“Well, that part maybe is,” she admits grudgingly. “But Dane is so hot, and the dates they go on are amazing.”

“They also aren’t real. Most people don’t take helicopter flights to dinner or charter yachts to private islands.”

“So? A girl can dream right?” Her wistful look suggests she dreams a lot. Funny, I didn’t get that vibe from her during practice.

“You should start watching it, then we can all talk about it.” Cat presses her hands together and sort of hops on the balls of her feet. “I’d love to hear what you think about Shannon.”

“I can’t. The only thing that ever is on the TV in our house is football.” For once I’m glad it’s football season, because the constant stream of games will save me from having to suffer through a reality TV show. And to be honest, since Wes has been trying so hard to convince me about the merits of the game, I haven’t minded watching it. Not that I enjoy the game or anything, just the company.

“I guess that makes sense.” Hannah smiles sweetly, giving me a reprieve.

“There aren’t any games on the day The Bachelor airs.” I’m not sure how she knows that, but Cat seems pretty convinced.

“Doesn’t matter. Any games that aren’t watched live are recorded. Football is literally the only thing on our TV.” I give her a little ‘what can you do’ shrug and sip my drink, hoping that’s the end of it.

“Wes wouldn’t give up a game so you could watch a show?” Sarah seems horrified, like it’s totally inappropriate for the guy to watch what he wants on his TV.

“It’s not just Wes, it’s everyone. They’re all football nuts, except me.”
