“I wasn’t trying to, I just told them the truth. I’d be a horrible cheerleader.”

“You also said you don’t like football, and you said it with a straight face.” Her expression says she’s waiting for the joke.

“That was the truth too.”

“Really? Isn’t your dad a football player?” She scrunches her nose.

“My dad’s too busy playing football to be a dad. Besides, who wants to watch a single game for four hours?”

“I’m going to have to side with the Power Puff Girls on this one.” Hollie shakes her head. “Not liking football is just wrong.”

“Why?”

“Have you seen the butts in those tight football pants? Damn, I could watch that all day.” She seems to disappear in her own mind for a second.

“Oh well that’s different. Butts I like, it’s the game I don’t care for.”

“News flash, you have to watch the game to see the butts.” Hollie tries not to grin as she delivers this blow.

“Or you could just run past the football field while they’re practicing. Same view.”

She cocks her head as she considers this. “I’ll still watch the game, but you’ve just inspired me to change my training route.”

I smile and laugh along with her, but inside I’m freaking out, because until that little excuse I hadn’t given serious thought to how butts looked in football pants, and now I can’t get the idea out of my head. Especially the idea of one certain butt, which is the one it’s best I never see.

“Okay, spillit.”Ryanfaces me in the locker room after practice, hands crossed over his chest. It’s his menacing stance, although it doesn’t phase me in the least because mine is better.

“Spill what?”

“You said you’d fill us in over lunch, and you dodged us. One day, things are normal and the next, you’re getting a hot sister. What gives?” Carter punches my arm.

“Not just a sister, a hot as fuck sister,” Bennet elbows him. I know he’s right, but it still makes me cringe to hear him say it.

“Honestly, there isn’t much to tell. I mean it.” I hold my hands up in mock surrender. “Pop and Jen hit it off over the summer, it got serious, you know the rest.”

“Bullshit.” Will huffs. “We worked that job site with you, and we didn’t see any of that going on.”

“That’s because Pop is a professional and doesn’t mix personal stuff with work.”

“Still, you’d think the fact that he was serious with Jen would come up before we find out they’re living with you,” Bennet says. “I mean, how do you not tell us about that until after the fact? We tell each other everything.”

I deflate a little because he’s right. One of the reasons we all work together so well on the field is we’re great friends offit, and that comes down to telling each other everything, just like Bennet said. But this isn’t just my story to share, which means I have to respect Sawyer’s wishes and keep some details of what happened between the two of us. They’re really going to be upset when they realize I haven’t told them who Sawyer’s dad is, another thing she doesn’t like to broadcast.

“Guys, it happened really fast. If I’d known they were gonna be living with us of course I would have told you.”

“Wait, are you saying you didn’t know they were moving in until it happened?” Ryan’s hand stops midway to his locker, eyes growing wide.

“Did you even know they were together?” Bennet’s expression matches Ryan’s.

“I’m saying I didn’t know the extent of it. I could tell they were interested in each other, but nothowinterested until the other day when Pop said he wanted them to live with us. And then we got busy moving them in and I didn’t get a chance to tell you guys about it because we were focused on trying to make them feel at home. Doing family stuff like dinners and shit.”

“So, this is a good thing?” Ryan arches a brow as he puts away his cleats. “I mean, it’s been just you and your dad for a long time. You’re good with this?” Of the five of us Ryan and I are the closest, so it’s no surprise he’s focused on how I’m doing over the shock value of this whole thing.

“I love this. You guys know how cool Jen is, I couldn’t pick a better person for my pop to fall for. And if they’re together then he won’t be alone when I go to college next year. I’m thrilled.”

“But it’s not just Jen, it’s her daughter, too.” Carter brings us back to that. Damn.
