“This I have to see. We’re in,” Ryan declares.

“I’m not sure…,” Wes begins.

“That’s not…,” I start.

“Ooh, this will be fun.” Hollie’s eyes sparkle. “The queens love it when men come to the show. Especially good-looking men. I’ll make a reservation asap!”

I take another gulp of my drink. This can’t be happening. It’s bad enough I’ll have to see Wes at family gatherings, now I have to see him socially too? I can’t even.

“No way.” Wes shakes his head. “I can’t think of a worse way to spend the evening than getting hit on by dudes dressed like girls. No offense to the queens.” He nods toward Hollie. “But that does not sound like fun.”

I steal a glance at Wes from the corner of my eye. Passing up an excuse to hang out doesn’t sound like the guy who keeps insisting we need to talk. Instead of watching me the way I’m expecting him to, he’s studying his beer.

“Dude. There’s no more scholarship to worry about. You can have a little fun now.” Ryan crosses his arms, shooting daggers at his friend.

“Sure I can,” Wes agrees. “That just doesn’t sound like fun.” This time his eyes meet mine, and without having to question it, I know he’s looking for me to back him up.Dammit. I take a drink.

I don’t want to go to drag queen bingo with Wes. I also don’t want him to think it’s okay to ask for backup. Since that seems to be the lesser of two evils, I go along with it.

“I can’t go next weekend, anyway. First shift.” I lift my shoulder in a little half-shrug.

“All weekend?” Hollie pouts.

“New girl.” I shrug again and finish my drink.

“I thought you said the job was only part time?”

“I have to do a few supervised shifts. I wanted to get them all out of the way as soon as possible.” I hate lying to Hollie, but if we can get past this evening maybe she and I can plan to do bingo without Ryan and Wes.

“Okay, what about the following weekend?” she asks.

“That’s the first preseason game.” Wes shakes his head. “I’ll be swamped.”

For once I’m grateful to have football interfere.

“Does it have to be a weekend?” Ryan asks.

Shit.I can’t do this. “Excuse me,” I mumble as I stand up.

“Where are you going?” Hollie demands.

“Uh, bathroom.”

“Ooh. I’ll go with you. Be right back,” she says to the guys.

Hollie grabs her purse off the table and falls into step next to me. “So, what about it? You can go on a weeknight, right?”

“I don’t know. I’m not really sure what my schedule’s going to be over the next few weeks.” I weave through the crowd towards the back of the bar.

“When can you find out? I really want to make a plan with the guys.”

“Really? Why?” I push the door open and head for the closest stall while Hollie goes to the sink.

“Because this is my chance to get to know Wes.”

Thank god I’m safely behind the closed door when she says this, because I’m pretty sure she’d notice the way those words make me freeze. Hollie…interested in Wes? Since when? I’m sure she finds him attractive, everyone does, but interested? Only one thing could be worse than having to see him with family, and that’s having to see him with my only friend. Could this night get any worse?

“Did you hear me?” Hollie calls. “I bet you could talk him into going with us. We could double.”
