My jaw drops open, though I’m too shocked to get any words out. I don’t know what I was expecting to hear, but that wasn’t it.

“Um, I uh...I don’t follow,” I finally stutter.

She chews on her lip again, and I can tell she’s searching for the best way to respond.

“I can count on one hand the number of girls whodidn’task what you look like naked.”

I’m distracted by how she blushes when she says that, like she’s embarrassed. Then her words register, and I choke as I absorb this information.

“They what? You’re kidding, right?”

She presses her lips together in a grim line and shakes her head.

“Uh, wow. Okay. Why does everyone think you’d know that?” I don’t think my attraction to Sawyer is so obvious that people are starting to speculate about it, but maybe I’m more transparent than I realize.

“No idea.” She shakes her head absently. “Unless brothers and sisters area lotcloser than I ever realized.”

The way she says it, with equal parts fear and confusion, makes me laugh. “That’s how you should answer then.”

“What do you mean?”

“Ask them if they’ve seen their brothers naked. When they cringe, you can ask why they think things would be different for you.”

“Except you aren’t my brother.” She sighs, and my guess is she didn’t mean to say that out loud because those pretty green eyes get real wide as soon as the words leave her mouth. I rush past that comment before either of us has time to dwell on it, because if I’m reading her tone right, it almost sounds like that distinction is as important to her as it is to me.

“No more excuses about people seeing us in the same car. You’re driving.” I dangle the keys. She inhales deeply and holds her breath. For a second I think she’s going to decline, but when she accepts the keys I realize she was probably just wishing she could take back the comment about me not being her brother.

We climb into the truck and Sawyer adjusts the seat and mirrors to her height. She might be tall, but I’ve still got six inches on her. When she’s situated, she smoothly pulls out of the space and points us toward home.

“Anything else interesting happen?” I relax into the passenger seat.

“I got invited to join the cheerleading team.”

Shit, that was unexpected. I’m pretty sure Sawyer would never try out for cheerleading, and I have a sinking feeling the explanation for that is going to resemble the naked comment. Maybe if I can get her to laugh about it, she won’t get any more embarrassed.

“I always thought you had to try out for that team, have the rules changed?”

“No.” She gives a slight head shake. “Apparently living with the star quarterback has its privileges.”

“Privileges?”

“Sure. I get to join without trying out, and my new best friends get to hang around me in order to see more of you. I guess it would be a good deal if I liked football, but seeing as I don’t, they dodged a bullet. I’d be a horrible cheerleader.”

She says it so matter-of-factly, like she thinks it’s normal for people to try to use her for her connections to others. It makes me furious. And embarrassed.

“I’m sorry.” I lean against the headrest.

“Why? It’s not your fault.”

I roll my head to face her. “You literally just told me that this happened because we live together. How is that not my fault?”

“Well for one, you had no control over us living together, and two, you can’t help how you look.” She glances at me pointedly.

“What does how I look have to do with anything?”

She cocks an eyebrow in my direction. I hate that I find that hot.

“What?” I exclaim.
