‘I’m supposed to be a bit late anyway,’ said Emma, her mouth now becoming dry with nerves.

Their excitement was palpable as they proceeded down the stairs and Steve whistled as they walked through the hallway. ‘You all look absolutely amazing,’ he said grinning.

‘Thanks,’ said Emma with a nervous shiver.

‘Is all okay at the venue?’ asked Kirsty.

‘Perfect. It is beautiful out there. This is going to be an amazing wedding.’

‘Is Max okay?’ asked Emma tentatively.

‘He is grand,’ Steve reassured her. ‘Just desperate for you to get there.’

‘Okay, are we ready to go?’ said Emma, taking a deep breath in. Amy handed her a water bottle and she took a grateful sip.

‘Oh look!’ Amy said, squealing as she saw Kirsty walking towards her with the flowers. They are incredible.’

Kirsty handed Emma the bridal bouquet.

‘I couldn’t have asked for anything more perfect,’ Emma whispered. ‘Thank you.’

‘Okay,’ said Kirsty. ‘I’ve got everyone else’s flowers and I’ll hand your posy to you when we get there, okay?’

‘You are so bossy,’ said Amy. ‘What do you think we’re going to do with them? Drop them or sit on them?’

‘I’m not even going to answer that, Amy. You’re not exactly known for your grace, are you?’ said Kirsty affectionately.

‘Yes, that’s true, you do have a point.’

Becky ushered everyone out of the door and took another quick photo as they stood in front of the car.

Emma’s smile spread even wider as she looked up at the beautiful sky above her and silently thanked her mum. Then she focused her grateful gaze on her family who were waiting for her to get in the car.

‘Come on, then,’ she said. ‘Let’s do this. Let’s go and get married.’

Chapter Thirty-Nine

Amy sat quietly in the car, holding Emma’s hand and sending out positive vibes for the rest of the day. She was so happy to see Emma looking radiant and relaxed, especially after the last few days when she had seemed so vulnerable. In less than an hour she and Max would be husband and wife and drinking champagne in the sunshine.

It had been a weird morning to say the least. Amy had led her sisters and Becky in a relaxing yoga session and then given Emma a soothing neck and shoulder massage in preparation for the big day. After their delicious brunch, cooked by Steve, Kirsty had asked her to go down to the distillery to check everything was okay, that the cake had arrived fromCèic and that there were no last-minute panics. She had been happy to assist, especially as she might get a chance to see James.

However, when she arrived at the distillery, he was nowhere to be seen and instead, his assistant, Rachel, was in charge. She was very reassuring and insisted everything was in hand, but Amy was completely thrown, wondering where James was. He was supposed to be in charge of Emma’s big day. ‘Is James going to be in later?’ she had asked, trying not to frown.

‘Yes, he should be,’ said Rachel vaguely.

‘I see,’ said Amy, though she didn’t at all but could hardly start quizzing Rachel about her boss’s whereabouts. ‘Do you know when?’

Rachel muttered something about him having to deal with ‘an issue’. Amy felt she couldn’t probe any further without causing suspicion and so had smiled, thanked Rachel for everything and given the place a quick once over — checking that the seats would be put outside in time for the ceremony underneath the thatched gazebo which had been brought in especially for the service.

‘Of course, please don’t worry,’ said Rachel, calmly. ‘It will all be sorted. I have the guest list here and everyone has a seat. Honestly, you go off and get ready and don’t worry. I have your mobile number and will ring if there are any problems.’

‘Okay, thanks,’ said Amy turning to go, still frantically scanning every nook and cranny for James. The place didn’t feel right without him there and she had a niggle in her stomach. Where was he? Did she even have a right to know? Was it any of her business? She was in such a flap that she forgot to check the cake had been delivered and had to dash back to ask Rachel, who confirmed it had, but who surely thought she was unhinged as her eyes scanned the buildingagain.

As she walked along the road that was parallel to the shore, she pulled her phone from her pocket and checked it for messages. There was nothing from James so she quickly typed one to him.

Is everything okay? I’ve been at the distillery and Rachel said you’re dealing with something x

She deliberated over the kiss, put two then deleted them both, deciding on one. What was wrong with her? She was behaving like a lovesick teenager.
